Lyrical style over substance
I quote Gruff Rhys in todays Metro, where he's talking about why he likes songs with lyrics he doesn't understand:
"Arguably, it's the emotion and voice that's important in a song"
This is something that I've always thought myself. The most important thing is the tune that is being sung, and good lyrics are just the cherry on top of the cake - good lyrics are good, but not essential.
I'm fairly sure that there will be a lot of people on DiS who disagree with this though.
as a reformed Manics-obsessive
i do still place a lot of stock in lyrics. i don't know, i just find it hard to listen to songs that have cringe-worthy lyrics.
of course
that doesn't mean they have to be lyrics i understand..
yes, cringe worthy lyrics can almost ruin a song
I was more talking about nonsense lyrics that aren't actually about anything.
And also songs that in a languange you don't speak. One reason i like SFA's welsh songs is that you can infer whatever meaning you like from the way that the songs are song.
