Nas' new single. Ina Gadda Da Vida. It's just the whole bloody song. Christ. Kanye West is the worst with this.
DON'T BRING THAT UP AGAIN
YOU'RE OUT OF YOUR ELEMENT
YOU CAN'T TALK ABOUT HIP HOP
JUST WATCH ME
DEAL WITH IT
Ok I'm stopping this, there's other people to mildly and pointlessly annoy for the sake of it and they are in my house RIGHT NOW.
get back to alabama!
Nas rapping over Iron Butterfly is a bit whatthefuck, and i think it's fucking great.
its jut artlessly stealing the original track, but if the source is good, it can be goodoh
it's really obvious samples being used and not even particularly well used.
in the 80s everyone and their grandma rapped over Funky Drummer and Impeach The President
that Kanye "Touch the sky" crap was dryyyyyyyyyyyyy, though.
it's all about how it's used though, if you're going to use an obvious sample, don't make a big thing of it and just leave it to do its job.
my favourite obvious sample: Dipset using "We Built This City" for "We Built This City", but saying they built it merely on "rock" and not rock and roll. yes, we get it, you deal crack! :D
that busta rhymes song had ozzy on it, and it was designed as a big crossover and shit.
this is just Nas getting a bit filthy over a dirty great riff.
cheaply using a well-known piece of music as a sample to try and make something catchy that is recognisable to a mass audience is very, very cheap and only very, very superficially comparable to the pioneering of sampling as a method.
sometimes you want a lo-fi punk record, or a big dumb Sabbath riff.
i don't see why everything has to be so forward thinking all the time.
anyway, it's hardly as if Nas has made a pop record here. it's a gutter street record, the riff is just a bit in the background over the drums. it's like "Made You Look" from a few years back where he just rapped over "Apache".
when I djed on Saturday night. I don't think it went down too well.
if i was there, i totally would have blasted my AK in the air.
i just remembered: that ghostface song where he just raps over the whole of the fucking Delphonics "La La Means I Love You", vocals and all, is one of the greatest things ever.
DON'CHU EVER SAY MY NAME AGAIN YOU PUSSY
I might try and sneak in a Ghostface track next time. If there is a next time.
if so, just play that again. on repeat. for days.
