Can anyone suggest any? I was listening to After The Goldrush today and it was AMAZINGGGGK
my morning jacket
all influenced by him, but then so are millions of bands/singersongwriters
Music that sounds like Dylan. Impossible....
Neil has so many phases and incredible records.
yeah, way too hard to answer
the accusation that horse with no name was a direct response and ripoff of heart of gold is a bit silly, as it came out about two weeks after heart of gold and was clearly written a long while before. yes it wasn't that original, and was taking very obvious neil/eaglesey elements to make something quite pop, but they were actually a pretty decent band (Ventura Highway in particular is a beautiful single), and their first 3 or 4 albums are all worth a listen for fans of that sort of thing.
really. i think what annoyed him was that cos it knocked heart of gold off of number one, lots of casual fans thought both songs were by him and so he would get requests for it at shows for a while.
is a beautiful song, regardless of whether or not it is construed as a direct rip-off or not.
the album version is 20 minutes...
3:27 in so far...
I'm not gonna suggest anything that sounds 'like' Neil Young, cos that'd be lame, but if you like him, you will probably like Gene Clark, listen to 'white light' from 1971 first
what should i buy?
and a good place to start
i would say the best intro might be Live Rust.
for a studio album: After The Gold Rush. both of them are £5 everywhere.
i'm so jealous that you get to discover neil youngs discography.
I still get to discover it too...I've listened to lots of that sort of thing- Crosbys first solo album, gene etc...but for some reason Neil Youngs stuff has never grabbed me.
might be cos my mum owns all his records or something, or his voice...
it's probably his final hurrah as well.
i'm only REALLY into the Neil Young records with the antisocial acid guitar bombs.
sleeps with angels then?!?!? its the mega guitar neil with horse in the nineties and still amazing.
i only just got into neil young recently, downloaded a damn near entire discography and decided to not bother post-Trans.
i'll keep it in mind now though.
admittedly i like trans, and the few albums after that are gash, but the following are all good to excellent (stars for the best):
Sleeps With Angels*
Year Of The Horse (live)*
Silver & Gold
Road Rock Vol 1 (live)*
Living With War*
if any of that sounds anything like the CSN&Y stuff, i'm running though.
check out sleeps with angels, its bloody brilliant. the 90s live stuff with crazy horse is fucking heavy, especially from the tour with sonic youth. you can hear that on the Weld album. there's also an accompany album to that called Arc which is an hour of neil feedback and solos cut into one big noise mess. its fuxored.
have never hear any neil young??? WUT?
Live Rust, yes. Zuma also, and Rust Never Sleeps, and After The Goldrush.
i can't believe you have never heard any neil young, you big ol alt-country fan you!
a lot of things i've never heard, i'm lame-x-o-core-x.
but i'd have thought Neil Young would be right up your indie-street. in fact, he most definitely is. Live Rust!
Haven't heard a lot of him, but the Snow Tires album reminded me of Neil Young in places. Which was a good thing of course.
albeit with a bit of beach boys
'Infiniheart' by Chad Vangaalen, he's Canadian too and has a similar voice. A great album.
I've just put songdog- time of the summer lightning as my favourite album of 2006. A decision that was not easy but I think justified. It has definite similarities to N.Y and would definitely be worth 2 minutes of your time to go to www.songdog.co.uk and check the sample of 'one day when god begs my forgiveness'. This is a genuine recommendation, it has nothing to do with me.unfortunately.
it's proper lovely. thanks all!
first steps into a larger world.
you might try either:
Decade - double disc compilation compiled by neil in 1977, including his stuff from buffalo springfield, a few CSNY songs (including the uberamazing standalone single Ohio) and songs from all of his solo albums up to that point, including 5 otherwise unavailable songs (including Winterlong, covered by the pixies).
Live Rust - double live album recorded in 1978 on one of neils best tours, sort of a live greatest hits with a short acoustic set followed by neil and the horse at their amazingest, includes the defining performances of Like A Hurricane and Cortez The Killer. PLAY THIS MUSIC LOUD.
or if you want another solo album, your love for the alt-country might inspire you to get
Tonight's The Night - recorded in 1973 and rejected by neils record company for being too bleak, and written in the wake of the heroin-overdose deaths of original crazy horse member danny whitten and roadie bruce berry, it's mega dark, mega influential and mega AMAZING. one of the best late night headphone albums ever. lofi, scratchy, bleak, perfect.
i quite like neil.
if you want another studio album there, not solo album.
