People are just posting about the music they've most enjoyed seeing live this year. Sounds like you're the one with the hangups reading too much into it.

    • Re: top 5 gigs of the year

      you seem confused.
your list is just as 'specialist' as the one you are talking about. BSP & Interpol & The Fall might seem very populist in your slightly skewed version of the world, but 95% of people in this country haven't got a clue who they are. Oh, and it's very fashionable of you to be anti-iPod... hating iPods seems to be the new black with you anti everything types...

        • Re: top 5 gigs of the year

I can't even remember 5 gigs I've been to this year. How bad is that? I was going to a couple a week for most of the year...

The Mendoza Line, Azure Ray and The Stills stand out as being particularly good in my memory, but no-one esle does...

Ah yes, I'm usually drunk. That was why.

Rosie Thomas/Iron and Wine/Sufjan Stevens was a great show. And Death Cab. And Explosions in the Sky.

I think I got to six, so forget the Mendoza Line.

these "best gig of the year" discussions are a waste of time and favour london too much. what if i was to claim that buck 65 was in fact infinitely better at the night & day in manchester?

              • Re: top 5 gigs of the year

a truly special gig should change the way you think about music forever. sean's 'i wanted to dive into a fountain' means a lot - i know exactly what u mean. i wanted to bungee jump off the brooklyn bridge after polysics. without the bungee rope.

                1. POLYSICS!!! at Coldrice in brum. fuckin AMAZING. i mean, words dont describe.
                2. Sonic Youth - ATP. they have magic. they are magicians.
                3. !!! - reading. just wish i hadnt been so stoned. i could barely stand never mind dance properly. they make other bands look so stupid. two thumbs fresh!*
                4. Dizzee Rascal - ATP. completely new-sounding and 100% charisma and commitment. that guy is a fuckin star.
                5. The Dresden Dolls - Madame JoJos. so much imagination, glamour, heartache, anger, style - fuck. i mean, just YES.

                worst -
peaches at Reading. i like her usually but it sounded totally shit.
pink grease were the most disappointing band of the year.
har mar at ATP - lame, flabby jackson 5 rip-off pop. he is SO over
the beat up - the absolute epitome of crap garage rock

                * ("two thumbs fresh" (c) fidel villeneuve 2004)

!!! - also at reading - Twas quite stoned but not enough to not dance - YES!!!
Blood Brothers - Rescue Rooms - Was Merry and Pippen
Lightning Bolt - Boat Club - Still shaking after a week ago
Fiery Furnaces - Reading - Would have danced but was too early in the day

Hey! Every man to their own, and if some corperate magazine cocksuckers have near the same taste than you then that's just bad luck - anyway it will change in a few months when something else "cool" happens like spacesuit punk (you heard it here first!)
