Music Social More…

"oh, you remind me of..."

millionaire [Edit] [Delete] 11 replies 13:43, 25 November '06

this misses the point of liking music and it's an extremely annoying sentence. It's far too blase and belittles the music of all involved.

"you're similair to [whoever...for whatever reason]" is acceptable.

random rant over.

  • Misplaced pedantry

To say something is similar is a stronger statement of likeness than to say something reminds you of something else. That is, you have the statements the wrong way around to support the point that you seek to make.

    • it's not just about the strength of the statement of likeness, though

it's about explicitly referencing the order in which you hear these bands - while you can't help that, using the expression 'remind...' implies that the band you're saying it to is derivative, whereas the 'similar...' expression doesn't so much.

    • I dunno

similair just means contains aspects. Reminding shows a fairly strong link, that you thought of another band/artist when you heard it.

    • It was more the justification in the similair thing

      that made it acceptable.

      • If you put some justification in "you remind me of"

it wouldn't be anywhere near as annoying.

        • they should just call them derivative if they are

I'm talking more about bands which are both good AND unique.

          • It's not my band

            It's just irritating.

Sorry to be so esoteric about it, but it just denys bands of what makes them special. Bands can be similair but at the same time be completely different. So band comparisons are almost always horribly inaccurate.

          • To clarify

this is not talking about real life. I rarely have conversations about music in that.
