How many threads do we need on this? Two in the music board and the original on the festival board.

    • what I want to know is

whether this is the sort of event that could persuade some "on hiatus" bands to get back together as a one-off. I'm thinking here specifically of Drive Like Jehu...

    • I'd like Band of Horses to play

to make up for my disappointment last year. Also, Iron & Wine - there's only one of him, so less to negotiate.

Except I spell Phils name properly.

      Jason Molina
      Gang Gang Dance
      ESG
      Phil Elverum
      Joanna Newsom
      Animal Collective
      Thanksgiving
Olivia Tremor Control / Circulatory System
      Os Mutantes
Wu Tang Clan. Or maybe just Ghost.

            • well we'll see

could work out crap, could be reaaally good. some of the confirmed stuff is ACE already, and most people can enjoy a good festival despite bad lineups (which i'm sure this wont be!)

              Jamie_Summers @i-deserve-to-be-in-your-band | 18 Nov '06, 12:32 | X
              • £130 on a bad lineup isn't something i can afford, personally.

and so far, this doesn't really interest me at all. it's largely bands that seem to tour a lot anyway.

with a voting system, there's going to be virtually zero obscurity or surprises, and to me the whole magic of ATP is that you get oddities like Negative Approach or The Dead C play, or you discover countless new bands you'd never heard of because someone else was picking them.

i think ATP should really go for the opposite direction and downplay the curator, whilst still having one: why does the curator have to headline? sometimes lesser-known musicians have the best taste.

i'd much rather have a curator dictating to me rather than for the same old bands playing again because by and large, when you get a vote, the same more well known acts will always get picked. whatever happened to discovery?

                i-deserve-to-be-in-your-band @Jamie_Summers | 18 Nov '06, 12:44 | X
                • They do 3 ATPs a year though.

So there'll still be plenty of variation and surprises. I won't be going to this one, mostly for the same reasons as you, but alot of people will go and enjoy it so whats the problem? So far the Dirty Three have picked out a few interesting obscurities for their weekend so I don't think this spells the end for diverse & interesting ATPs.

                  Thought_Dreams @i-deserve-to-be-in-your-band | 18 Nov '06, 12:59 | X
                  • i hope not.

and i hope that i'm pleasantly surprised by the lineup for this one, although it'll probably be long sold out by then :\

i'd just love to see someone with great taste that isn't necessarily in a really big band to pick a bill for ATP as there's so much potential there.

                    bah, humbug, etc.

                    i-deserve-to-be-in-your-band @Thought_Dreams | 18 Nov '06, 13:03 | X
                    • They've done it before.

Jake & Dinos Chapman curated what looked to be an awesome ATP. I went to the Gallow one and he just played for half and hour in the afternoon and all the other bands were amazing. At that ATP alone I discovered Gang Gang Dance, Afrirampo & Majick Markers before even UTR had put them on.

                      Thought_Dreams @i-deserve-to-be-in-your-band | 18 Nov '06, 13:12 | X
                      • i want this again!

they haven't done it in a fair while, which makes me think that they might never do it at the new site.

                        prove me wrong, atp!!!!!!!

                        i-deserve-to-be-in-your-band @Thought_Dreams | 18 Nov '06, 16:43 | X
      • This should be good

the fact is it depends on what you want. It will be a best of with bands everyone has heard of. But that will be AMAZING. It'll just be like a really really good version of a regular festival.

If you want underground bands to discover you have all the other ATPs ever for you. It'll be a good change.
