so off the mark i'm never going to read it again. the fly that is.
rather good - in a fairly bland way
the same way all the flys reviews seem to be
i don't think i've seen them have a bad word for anyone ever
did it say...
OUT OF FIVE
the live reviews are far worse though.
Have a look at Channel 4 teletext page 354 (subscreen 3, I think) It seems Earls is off at the moment, but there's no excuse for that.
(Disclaimer: I haven't actually heard this album yet, but this forum's been enough)
is rubbish, yes - but i don't think it's earls' work. it just doesn't read like him, there's almost no attempt to engage with the album in the review. and that's strange for an 8/10 review.
i haven't heard the new album yet but 'worlds apart' was disappointing enough. it's been downhill since 'madonna' imo...
colin irwin is writing PS this week. he's done the single reviews and demo reviews anyway.
that it's pap?
not making music for their old fans any more, rather it seems they're making music for themselves. i'm not sure what made them turn their back on their noise, but it did seem to coincide with neil leaving and jason taking a smaller role within the band (read: when conrad's role grew even larger)
it is a rubbish album, if anything it makes me put on source tags like straight after listnening to it. my opinion may very much change, but at the moment, i'm sorta ignoring it. they're not playing much if any of the new songs live, so i guess i'll still go and see them if they make it over here in the new year, but that's because i've never seen them before :(
and that fucking larakin love advert on the left is doing my goddamn nut in, every time i move my mouse over to go to another window!!!!!!!!!
that fly review is that it implies that its the first truly honest trail of dead album, because in the past they were just catering to people who wanted noise and couldn't appreciate how complicated and arty they really wanted to be. however he obvously doesnt realise that the new album is NONE OF THOSE THINGS.
does this mean TOD are now shit?
i saw them with the 'original' (ish) lineup a couple of times (well, with Neil Busch at least) and more recently with the 'new' lineup.
have always lived em live... am i now going to be disappointed?
*prepares to cry*
they are now poop.
review also says to the extent "well if they are to split up, at least they went out doing what they wanted to do." I can only think if they are to split up they went out doing what Conrad wanted. God, the album just screams for another Jason song.
been listening to the album on their myspace. sounds a bit wet really... certainly in comparison to previous stuff. ah well. i'm sure they'll stick kick ass live.
in the Fly?
Very different, very different. I'll post my oppinion when it's finished though.
it's painful and embarassing and I'm not buying the album. It makes me sad :(
aware they had a new album coming out. Oh well.
it's been getting very good reviews in the papers and stuff, and very poor ones on websites.
I haven't heard it yet, though don't really want to either
was about the same, gave it 8/10 and said they'd finally set themselves free or something. it also said that the guided by voices cover is called 'Gold Heart Mountain Top Queen Directory'. the real name of the song is 'The Goldheart Mountaintop Queen Directory', but the nme person wrote the title like that because the promo spells it like that. this thus proves that the nme person is a non GBV loving dullard, and thus even more lame than i initially thought. i may be being pinikity, but we music geeks must have our fun.
All hail geekiness.
they gave Words Apart 3/10!!!!??!
i guess we'll see. i hope they dont split up, because theyre still fantastic live...
"Painful and embarassing" - Ocean Storm
"Solid Gold Pap" - Jamie Summers
"It is a rubbish album" - Dazedmarc
"A bit wet, really" - Benners
Not really standing up very well is it?
It's not that the music's bad, it's just that it's not Trail of Dead. It sounds like fucking.. I don't know. It's fucking weird. There's some alright tracks on it, Stand In Silence, Wasted State Of Mind and So Divided spring to mind as being better than the rest. Eight Days Of Hell is alright in a gay prancing kind of way.
But Jesus, it's a bit BORING.
And the artwork is, by and large, shite.
I hope this one grows on me, it's nowhere near their old stuff. (Also, I really like Worlds Apart)
in my opinion, a nice little breather after Worlds apart, as it is intended. I don't think this is the "new" Trail of Dead in any way, they just needed a break from their sound.
...at least they've done something different...
It should be arriving today for me. I've only listened to it once when it leaked and I thought that it was slightly on the boring side, but it has potential to grow on me like Worlds Apart did. The title track is probably the pick of the album. They have gone in a different direction instead of making another Madonna/Source Tags and Codes, which is not a bad thing but I can see why people would say that it just doesn't sound like them, and I agree it is a bit weird at first.
The new album actually does sound to me as if it is a progression from what they were trying to do in Worlds apart, which didn't really match up to their previous work.
The question is, would people have criticised them if they had made an album along the same lines as Source Tags and Codes/Madonna or not?
advertising campaign was done around that list of quotes.
"So Divided is marked only by its dearth of ideas."
I want to love, but can't
and nearly cried on my way to work. and i LOVED world's apart.
so gutted. i think 2/3 songs are ok/pretty decent but some of it makes me weep. to be fair they did say they were worried about this being an album as originally they only had a few songs for an EP.
Stand In Silence and So Divided are actually really good.
Wasted State of mine is quite good too, Naked Sun is ok. Gold Heart Mountaintop Queen Directory is also good. I'm just getting over the shock of how non-TrailofDeaddy they sound, if this isn't the new Trail Of Dead then that's ok. I did know it was an EP originally, which sortof explains some of it. It's way overproduced, though.
they turned one of my most loved gbv songs into a paul mccartney single
is that it keeps being branded "better than Worlds Apart"
But I also get annoyed by everyone hating Worlds Apart. It was good.
early fans wail
the world yawns
band are washed up
you smell of poo
interview with Conrad on Pitchfork...
sorta interesting, goes into his outlook regarding this album and puts a lot of things into context.
the album only gets 5.5
