Bands featured on DiS

-Raz- [Edit] [Delete] 46 replies 00:22, 7 November '06

I have noticed there have been lots of
"Why are this band even on this website?"
comments

What does this mean?

Does it mean that a handful of people who write for this website should dictate what bands are read about by an awful lot of people, thus removing some of your liberties and natural choice

I believe in unbiased reportage of bands to allow the readers to form their own opinions without prejudice or pressure.

Why am I finding that my views are unacceptable?

Please explain.

Who draws the lines about what should be reported and written about?

Who chooses what bands are vetoed in terms of editorial content?

And why?

  • They are idiots.

    Idiots <3 internets!1

    • (i know this)

i just want one of them to explain themselves foolishly

      -Raz- @Effloresce_Sean | 7 Nov '06, 00:26 | X
      • OH COME ON

        -Raz- @-Raz- | 7 Nov '06, 00:38 | X
        • It's not that.

It's just that by saying it, people gain cheap indie-points.

          Whoever invented indie-points must die.

Having a My Chemical Romance review here and there on the website is fine by me, so long as there's nothing being taken away to put it there.

I pay no heed to the hip-hop or electronica reviews that show up. Likewise, music that I KNOW I don't like, I just brush over.

          You should, too.

  • well

would you stop covering shit sortof-metal bands? please, they're just no need

    bobj | 7 Nov '06, 00:41 | X
    • I bet I come here...

...just for reviews of some of the bands you'll call shit sortof-metal.

      scarfo @bobj | 7 Nov '06, 00:45 | X
  • I agree

but the news section isn't exactly unbiased is it?

    Thom_fa | 7 Nov '06, 00:43 | X
    • (not that this bothers me at all)

but it contradicts what you're saying.

      Thom_fa @Thom_fa | 7 Nov '06, 00:44 | X
      • The news section...

        ...is often very funny.

And, I don't think, isn't often written by Raz!

        scarfo @Thom_fa | 7 Nov '06, 00:46 | X
        • I agree with

and am fully aware of both of those points.

          So?

          Thom_fa @scarfo | 7 Nov '06, 00:47 | X
          • As Raz doesn't write it...

...his views on how the rest of the site should be are less relevant.

This is a moot point anyway.

            scarfo @Thom_fa | 7 Nov '06, 00:48 | X
            • less relevant...

...to the way the news is.

              scarfo @scarfo | 7 Nov '06, 00:49 | X
            • The news section makes up a substantial part of the site.

              Thom_fa @scarfo | 7 Nov '06, 00:49 | X
              • yeah it fits perfectly

                read post #1

i ask if people want bias and skew

                you are saying yes

                -Raz- @Thom_fa | 7 Nov '06, 00:51 | X
                • hmmm

                  good point.

                  Thom_fa @-Raz- | 7 Nov '06, 00:52 | X
                  • So

do you think the news stories are biased or not? I do and I like it.

                    Thom_fa @Thom_fa | 7 Nov '06, 00:52 | X
                    • yes. but i think news is trivial

do you read any reviews or interviews?

                      or just news and forums?

                      -Raz- @Thom_fa | 7 Nov '06, 00:55 | X
                      • reviews occasionally

interviews if it's someone I'm interested. But mainly news and forums.

                ...stories a day? I disagree.

I consider the forums, reviews and listings to be far more important!

  • do a feature on

    i am ghost. go on.

    holyellen | 7 Nov '06, 08:36 | X
    • It's like all magazines/websites

The people that run it have their own preferences and dislikes. Whether or not these accord with your own views is often the reason that you patronise the mag or site.

Very broadly, I tend to support the kind of bands that are featured here. But not in all cases, and not all the time.

If the powers that be decide that certain bands should not be covered or that others are the bee's knees, and this becomes a problem for me, I will take myself elsewhere.

      Silentcommand @holyellen | 7 Nov '06, 09:05 | X
  • I agree with Raz's protestations completely

However, it is not uncommon for DiS writers to invite the users to expresss their opinions on bands promoted by DiS writers, as if the writers are looking for assurances that they are correctly targetting a demographic.

  • Raz:

Keep covering 'silly' and 'sortof' metal bands. That's why I come here.Unless you want rid of me, which is highly likely...

    james_delve | 7 Nov '06, 12:30 | X
    • this isn't a personal validation

i've seen it on loads of articles

it just makes me wonder why people come to dis

      -Raz- @james_delve | 7 Nov '06, 13:25 | X
      • I get this with ToL and Fightstar

To me, they're just taking up space where other bands should be; and I've said so.

I'm sure both bands have lots of fans who visit the site. But there are other bands out there who could use the exposure more.

        Teepee_uk @-Raz- | 7 Nov '06, 16:32 | X
        • but ToL, Fightstar, BMTH

are not being covered at the EXPENSE of other bands!

          it's additional material
          it's more information

i don't understand why people want less.

          -Raz- @Teepee_uk | 7 Nov '06, 16:54 | X
          • I see your point

It's pointy. It's not like the other bands have been relegated to a column on page 47; it's a big party, everyone's invited.

But, if you look at how many news stories those bands have generated, I can't see how that volume of coverage on them can be warranted. And that's based on a value judgement on my part. Which makes this more of a difference of opinion than a genuine argument.

Time up at the internet cafe. Meh.

            Teepee_uk @-Raz- | 7 Nov '06, 17:13 | X
          • you say its not at the expense of other bands

but how many other metal/hardcore bands get much coverage on here? mostly just the kerrang cover stars, with the odd mastodon or blood brothers here and there. how many people need OR want to know about a band like BMTH? you are writing to an audience, and it does appear to be at the expense of more interesting bands in the same scene. How many times have we seen, say, Rolo Tomassi front page centre?

            lazerlife @-Raz- | 7 Nov '06, 20:03 | X
            • gallows

              gojira

              lamb of god
              charger
              iron sloth

              to name but a few

              ...

              -Raz- @lazerlife | 8 Nov '06, 00:38 | X
            • rolo tomassi? front page?

              later...!

              Mike_Diver @lazerlife | 8 Nov '06, 01:30 | X
              • blatantly!

i'm all for metal but some of the cds/interviews etc are just utterly dross metal. where is all the interesting, more obscure/experimental stuff? lamb of god are RUBBISH. gojira are BORING. no one cares about charger. and if you're going to interview bmth it might as well be interesting.

                holyellen @Mike_Diver | 8 Nov '06, 09:35 | X
                • HAHAHAHA

lamb of god rubbish? gojira boring?

                  you're so wrong

                  -Raz- @holyellen | 8 Nov '06, 12:42 | X
                  • Haha.

                    She is like.

                    james_delve @-Raz- | 8 Nov '06, 12:52 | X
                    • ok whatever

but they're hardly 'interesting/cutting edge' metal.

come on, you thought baroness and torche were obscure. like someone said somewhere else, dig a little deeper.

and gojira were a proper yawn fest at download. so what they're huge in france.

                      holyellen @james_delve | 8 Nov '06, 13:05 | X
                      • yeah

baroness/torche... that was a joke. because as you might have seen, had you dug a bit deeper (thought you were a fan), i was at the gig with mike

yawn fest? you clearly just don't like metal.

                        -Raz- @holyellen | 8 Nov '06, 13:28 | X
                        • my bad, i didnt realise

you were being sarcastic. and we like different stuff, thats just taste.

but i'm just saying for the 'bands featured on DiS' when it comes to the more 'metal' stuff, it could be way more interesting. you asked, thats my opinion.

                          holyellen @-Raz- | 8 Nov '06, 13:32 | X
                          • i think there's a great blend personally

if you want only the most interesting stuff all the time, you lose sight of what is normal

fact of the matter is, no matter how many great, new interesting bands there are on the site you will still be there complaining

i know this because there is no other publication that champions new bands like DiS

                            and it still isn't enough.

                            -Raz- @holyellen | 8 Nov '06, 13:40 | X
  • I think it's totally stupid

to criticise DiS for what it DOES cover, rather than what it doesn't.

    homesick_alien | 7 Nov '06, 20:12 | X
    • .

This band have no place on DiS. SRSLY.
