I noticed that this has leaked. Anyone listened to it? Sounds phenomenal from what I've heard so far.
..my favourite by them. How good is Wet and Rusting.
I really like the acoustic remix of it at the end of the Wet & Rusting EP too. Such a different approach on the same song.
Many plays later, yet still not enough time to totally settle in, I have to say the closing track is my absolute favourite. When it keeps teasing you with that line "Oh to be a machine, oh to be wanted, to be useful" it's like the perfect combination of the clinical beats of I Am The Fun Blame Monster and the fantastic ability to slowly and smoothly build progressions from Under An Hour.
One thing that does bother me about the album though, is the vocalist who sounds disturbingly like Damon Albarn at times then like a strained TV On The Radio combo at others. There's something about the way he pushes so hard for every note that seems like it's trying to get attention when there's so much beauty in the instrumentation behind it. There are times like on the opening track where it actually fits, but unfortunately, I find it more miss than hit. He had a much more passive role in IATFBM, which I thought worked really well. Songs like The Late Great Libido wouldn't have been the same without his vocal lines, but that's because of their restrain and only coming in where any vocals were needed at all. It was this sparse, delicate use of vocals that was one of the big things I found so appealing in Menomena in the first place. You hung onto every word because every word mattered. "I am, fused out of iron, I am". The vocals didn't come into that song until about half way through, but when they did, you were almost bent over double in anticipation for when they arrived, and overstay their welcome they didn't. I think it's a shame the other vocalist didn't get more airtime since even though he arguably has a weaker voice, there's a certain, difficult to describe charm that he brings like Connor Oberst or Jamie Stewart. Take for example The Monkey's Back from IATFBM which would have been the album's weakest moment if it weren't for the way he delivered each word as if it was his last. That's probably my only criticism of the album, but annoyingly, when it's so predominant, it's one difficult to ignore.
Also, if you get a chance, check out the track Gay A from the Wet And Rusting EP. The other b-sides are okay, but this particular song is worth it alone for the EP.
When's it actually out?
23rd Jan 2007.
It's a shame it's not being released sooner considering it's been leaked so much earlier than that, but considering how much I like the band, I just couldn't wait.
What a great day...
News Shins, Of Montreal. and Menomena records!
"They sounds to me like many other bands out there" to be more true with this album than the first, although that's just my opinion. It's funny because part of the reason I liked the first album so much was because I found it so refreshingly different.
