If a band COMPLETELY changes its line-up, to the point where there are no original members, is it still the same band?
but if like the Cure, or The Fall, there is one member then yes.
my dissertation was pretty much on this. i concluded that band names are categorising functions for music, largely for brand recognition.
one person generally ends up with the legal rights to the name, so the name functions in his financial interest.
similarly: if, as in the case of cap'n jazz and owls, the same 4 people change the name that they play under, and write entirely new songs, are they a different band?
i's say yes.
the Käse Chiefs do this as well? Or did they swap members when they stopped being Parva?
Surely every band where this sort of thing happens has at least one original member in it?
but I'd imagine only in the case where members stayed with the band for an incredibly long time. E.g. a new member joins after one album and 10 years later they're the only connection to the original members of the band...
