just wondering - what do you all make of this? (particularly people in bands)
scroll down to the yellow bit...
so, 100 bands sign up for the 'monopoly'. each band then has to show up to every gig, if they're playing or not, to stay in the monopoly, thus ensuring a packed venue for the bands who are playing.
Everything about this makes me want to be sick. All this crap about bringing punters in.
'If you don't bring anyone we'll tell all the other promoters about you so you can't get gigs'....very fucking productive.
This makes me angry.
YOU'RE the promoter, YOU bring the people in.
People like this should be stabbed in the eyes with cocktail sticks. Why does ANYONE play these nights?!
I've not heard of a single one of those bands though. Are they just making them up?
Also, doesn't the whole tone of the spiel seem a bit... well... 'aggro'. I'd be worried to play there in case I got nutted for talking back to the soundman.
use the word 'buzz' a little too often, which always sets my gag reflex reeling.
the token representitive who say we just don't understand what he's saying?
give them a few more names for their blacklist.
i won't though, obvs.
how childish of them.
Was that written by someone who has English as a second language?
Or, have I missed the point?
"NB: There are some out there that say this is a scam. How can it be when we are looking at paying bands more than most venues out there!? This will make you laugh a low key group of no-bodies (probably posh folk from Muswell Hill or the like)- sent us an email saying 'Your hairbrained Monopoly Scam' had created such uproar and they are all talking about it on a message board which is fantastic promotion for us and the Monopoly! Are they just jealous they didnt invent the idea? www.drownedinsound.com/content/view/1141133. It was started by another Venue / 'Promoter' / 'Record label' who are very obviously worried that it would work and should concentrate on their own shit instead of fucking with us! So jump aboard folks. We are going to be looking at doing this on a regular basis and hopefully bigger venues..."
and then later:
someone is fanning our flames on the net. We know who they are! and exactly who is involved. Venue and some promoters -www.drownedinsound.com/content/view/1141133 . Not sure what they do but doesnt seem to be too much ecxiting stuff out there. They say nice things about bands that labels have invested loads of money to and dont seem to care about new bands..unless of course they are earning doe out of them!
Its great that these upper class kids are having a go becasue lets face it, all promotion is good promotion. it is a shame that they think that bands that bring ZERO people should be able to play and not have any come-back."
and onwards into RANT RANT RANT. Wow...
The tone of that reminds me of Homer Simpson's advert when Marge was trying to get some law passed.
These people are from 'OUT OF STATE!!!!'
ha ha ha ha
that is hilarious.
My band's only done six or so gigs, and I can already smell a shite promotor a mile off.
I'd recommend Sean of Fortuna Pop as a genuinely nice and honest promoter...the rest I've dealt with have just been 'okay'. We were first on at the Buffalo Bar, and he gave us seventy quid, and gave us no shit about dragging people down.
These guys sound like a bunch of total tossbags. Their site is so rambling and obnoxious, I can't figure out what they are on about.
Are they the only people promoting at Archway Tavern now or something?
did i say anything about their ideas? did i fuck. so i responded to their little rant on the site with
"Excuse me - all I did was post a link to your website and ask what
people thought. How am I "fucking" with you? Think before you type such
utter shit about people on the internet."
and they've responded with
"You were obviously being a total cunt! Now if you wanna know more info ask
us you prick! Fuck off with your own label or whatever shite you do"
right, i was a cunt for posting a link to their website and asking what people though? eh?
I remember once before when you posted a link on these boards and I thought. "What a cunt!"
Where will it end?
cool! this is really kicking off! it does seem like a load of balls
...they sound like idiots.
"is this a big pile of shit".
well apparently that's what i've already done. although in THAT case i was obviously making a rhetorical question. in this one i wasn't. they're on a witch hunt for me anyway, despite the fact i've still not actually stated any opinion about their 'company'. fuck 'em.
# does your music stand up against stuff in circulation right now
# are you the right age? We are looking for bands that are young (or young looking and exciting and look good - they must have a full mop of hair etc)
# Do you have the right attitude? Can you have a conversation and not annoy or piss people off? its about making friends and accepting that their might be people that dont like your music.
# Are you financially astute? You need to plan a way to success and often this involves losing money getting to gigs etc.
# Do you offer something different? or do you just look like a boring local band?
# Are you good enough for a record label want to sign you?
# Are you thick skinned?
# Do you practice more than once per week? (if you dont then dont bother to contact us)
# Are you good enough a musician to take your songs into the studio?
# Are you looking to win and lose as a band or is the songwriter going to treat you like a session musician when the band makes money? (if so were not interested)
# Are you loyal, trustworthy and fine outstanding people with decent qualities?
# Are you an entertainer? or do you just assume that people will love songs that they have never heard before?
# Do you sit at a gig waiting to soundcheck & speak to other bands and venue staff in a light manner like it was in the times of love and peace in the 60's?
Surely, they are taking the piss.
It's so unpunk it's almost Wakeman.
I'd go the other way and say this is Anti-Wakeman.
Don't get me wrong, I'd do many horrible things before listening to too much Yes, but they strike me as a band of proper musicians that accidentally wrote songs got into the business.
This list might as well have one question: Wanna see yourself in the NME?
These guys are clearly a bunch of wankers. I love their rant about people cancelling gigs. Clearly nobody in the history of music has ever had a legitimate reason for pulling a gig. Sore throat? Broken arm? Suck it up, you pussy!
"are you the right age? We are looking for bands that are young (or young looking and exciting and look good - they must have a full mop of hair etc)"
I'm still not sure if they are taking the piss. But they present the quetions are requirements for a band to be managed by Tube Club management.
"does your music stand up against stuff in circulation right now?" What does that mean? Does it mean "are you the best abnd in the world?" "Stuff in circulation"??? What?
"Are you the right age?" For what? Being fucked up the ass by a slimy music biz. creep?
"Can you have a conversation and not annoy or piss people off? its about making friends and accepting that their might be people that dont like your music." Translates are "Do you suck dick?"
"Are you financially astute? " No. It's a band. They are artists.
"Do you offer something different? or do you just look like a boring local band? " Why have a go at "local bands"? Aren't all bands local to somewhere?
"Are you good enough for a record label want to sign you? " Yes, a band is liekly to be at least as good as Teletubbies or Ashlee Simpson.
"Are you thick skinned?" Eh?
"Do you practice more than once per week? " Together?
"Are you good enough a musician to take your songs into the studio? " I am reminded of Slits' Peel sessions: Incompetant musicianship and "two of the best sessions ever" according to John Peel.
"Are you looking to win and lose as a band or is the songwriter going to treat you like a session musician when the band makes money? (if so were not interested)" What have they got against songwriters? Is songwriting deemed unhip?
"Are you loyal, trustworthy and fine outstanding people with decent qualities? " translates as "are you a pliable puppy we can exploit?"
"Are you an entertainer? or do you just assume that people will love songs that they have never heard before? " Fucking Michael Barrimore.
"Do you sit at a gig waiting to soundcheck & speak to other bands and venue staff in a light manner like it was in the times of love and peace in the 60's?" "Venue staff?" What?"
# Do you practice more than once per week? (if you dont then dont bother to contact us)
Is that a typo? What's wrong with a band who rehearse more than once a week? CONFUSION!
i.e. if you are out of practise.
not that you'd notice with the oh-so-shambolic bands who has signed up already..
cheers. Now I read it again it makes more sense.
The conclusion seems to be: Bands are employees, employed by us, the management, and they need to show they are worthy of employ. Such an attitude is wrong and the opposite of what should happen.
one band at least appears twice :D
*this question may or may not have been just driving me insane.
46.Under The Kosh

2 in 1 night
Entrance to this night will also get you in the Monopoly for just £6
Also - girls get in for a reduction - indie girls are the finest out there so they can get in for £4
They aren't dreadful. They sound a bit like a speeded up Comsat Angels
A bit dull
I'd have bottled him.
I've threatened to bottle my old manager and he did was destroy my band.
I fucking hate music management.
Parasites. Most of em..
with posh folks from muswell hill. we're still allowed to like music!
i just read the yellow bit as well. it fucking hacks me off so much when people make the "private school = not real music fan" assumption. and i didn't even go to private school. it just....argh. firstly, it's a stupid 'promotion' idea, and secondly, who the fuck are they to say how much you like/are passionate about/believe in music just because of where you LIVE and maybe what school you went to. that doesn't matter AT ALL. this reverse snobbery is the dirge of music scenes.
We turned down a gig at this venue months ago, a week before we were supposed to play simply because we had a bad feeling about it, before we read their great website criteria! Im so happy we didnt play!
1) the venue has to understand that no matter how well an unsigned band are doing to pull a whole bunce of people to fucking Archway is not an easy task, central london or the east end is a different story.
2) If an unsigned band is doing rather well it means they are probably playing alot of gigs, e.g 1-2 a week. So to pull 50-100 people consistently is rather difficult. It is at this stage in a bands career when a cetain amount of confidence is placed in the promoter to pull people because they have a) consistently good bands b)cheap drinks c)good indie djs
simple yet effective methods in guarenteeing a loyal audience.
This venue sounds like shit! And i too have never heard of the bands they have listed, and i have my ear to ground most of the time. If they send my band another email through myspace asking us to play (which they have done three times now) i shall politely tell them to fuck off!!!
Werd. Two years of gigs of almost certainly VARIABLE quality.
And if you become big in the meantime and/or get a better management deal elsewhere, do you get your money back?
if your band plays in the first couple of gigs, pity the poor sods who end up attending 30 of these, sitting through blandness in the hope that they'll have a decent audience ONCE at some unspecified point in the future, provided all the other bands don't just forget all about it once they've played...
They charge money to review demos!
Their shitness knows no bounds...unbelievable.
dunno if anyone has said this but:
BANDS NEVER WATCH OTHER BANDS!!!!!!!! GO TO ANY GIG AND WATCH ANY BAND ONLY STAY FOR THIER OWN SET!!!!!!
ha ha ha...forgot that. I did a gig with The Fog Band, and I didn't even set eyes on la Grindrod.
A sick error
they've left a message on the tigertrap myspace
"thx for fanning the flames. all promotion is good promotion
we + the Monopoly love you
this thread has clearly been great promotion for them and they're obviously not upset anymore. so that's ok!
nothing more to add to this, but seriously??!
if bands are good, more people will go and watch them. You can't force people to be an audience!
I've forced this board to be my audience for my extreme right wing views for quite a while now
Even if one sets aside, temporarily, the dubious nature of the enterprise and merely comsiders Tommy_Gunn's explanation and support, the idea of this monopoly is wrong. It is wrong because its objective to increase the popularity of bands makes no concession whatsoever to the quality of the music and the quality of the songs.
A good band with good songs achieves popularity, initially, by word of mouth, which, today, means the internet. In particular, sites should as this and myspace. How long this takes depends on several factors, including the band's level of commitment, their location, their availability to do gigs during the week, etc. If the band has talent then how long it takes them to become relatively well-known, whether six months, a year, two years, is not that important.
In complete contradiction to the above, monoply offers popularity to any band regardless of their degree of shitness, provided they can sell themselves and put the hours in to see others in the monopoly. The whole ethos of monopoly is diametrically opposed to good music and the genuine development of talent in a band. It is wrong, intrinsically wrong.
I didn't ask for private correspondence so I'll put it here in full:
"I’m really finding it interesting reading all the views (at least they are a little bit more sensible now!), but we aren’t necessarily agreeing with your opinion about the band quality.
I sent a message to the girl that started this off and said that we thought it a little offensive that you guys who I’m sure buy into what the latest fads are, are slating us for putting new bands on. How on earth are bands going to improve if venues don’t put them on? Also our aim is to get the new bands and offer them some help and try and get them into a situation where they are bloody good. Also many of the bands that play are already good.
We looked at what your saying and think you have us wrong. We only ask bands to bring at least 15 people so that the venue has some bods in and then our walk up will follow. Its not a scam, and it aint pay to play.
Re: The Monopoly – we are going to be paying unsigned bands more than most venues in the UK, and also the bands are pretty good. Yeah we want busy nights – tell me a promoter who doesn’t! Music is about fun. Its not about excellence. I’ve seen many bands who were excellent but the night was boring and in a sterile venue, wheras I’ve been to some shambolic gigs where the atmosphere was electric and had a better time. Its entertainment, and that is a subjective thing.
Anyway – alls good. there are more people intrigued now and we’ll give them a good night if they wanna turn up."
i don't post anything about them and i get called a "cunt".
Couldn't be bothered remembering/finding your name, and "woman" might have been better, or "lady"!!
I am, but some people here aren't
they can do what they wanna do.
i just won't go to their nights.
not that they'd let me in anyway!
i like the archway tavern though.
don't think there's anything sexist about being called a 'girl'.
"2 in 1 night
Also - girls get in for a reduction - indie girls are the finest out there so they can get in for £4"
That's for one of the Monopoly nights.
