The Jam
I think that there is insufficient, nay, almost no appreciation for The Jam on these boards. This ananomaly exists despite the plethora of bands who sound like The Jam around at present. Occasionally some ageist comments about Paul Weller appear but that is all. I would like to express my fondness for the aforesaid band's great pop songs of the late seventies: 'In The City', 'News Of The World', 'Modern World', 'The Eton Rifles', 'Going Underground', 'Strange Town', ''A' Bomb In Wardour Street', 'When You're Young', 'That's Entertainment', 'Funeral Pyre' and the stunning 'Down In The Tubestation At Midnight'. Great pop songs that everyone should be enjoying.
90%
of music the NME shoves down my neck is largely influenced by the Jam, but they don't seem to notice it. I don't think mod is very fashionable at the moment.
I like the Jam.
I don't like their Taxman rip off though.
Late 70's
and Earky 80's
for shame JTD!
I quite like the Jam.
Somewhat surprisingly I like Start! a lot. Although Taxman is better.
Paul weller makes me want to die
That's Entertainment
is an AWFUL song
But
The Eton Rifles is a GREAT song
it is.
as yet unmentioned:
town called malice
not as good as the other big singles.
I like The Jam
and also some of Paul Wellers' stuff.
indeed !
I love the Jam !
Got into them
and bought all their albums when I was at school. Have had Start playing on my internal jukebox lately.
Melinda
my college sweetheart loved 'em to death. She woulda had one of those Vespas too if it wasn't for the wind wrecking her hairdoo.
I avoided the mod scene, myself, because I never cared for the Who. I always said it was a travesty for the Jam cos they're ten times better than the Who.
Anyway, so yeah, the Jam were good and so were the Style Council... but never my fav.
Weller's held up OK, too, then, eh? Saw him do an acoustic thingy a while back. Not bad.
Real Mods don't listen to the Who
yes
the jam were quite a good band. but the whole thing is ruined by weller's shit solo career, style council and his love for thatcher. the cunt.
forget
weller solo career.
It never existed.
I thought
he just threatened to vote for Thatcher to piss people off? I like the Jam, but I can't remember the last time I went to an indie club and didn't hear one of their songs.
no
he said he voted for her because she was right. the FUCKNUT
No,
he has stated in interviews that his comment about voting conservative was a wind-up. This at the time when inflammatory statements were a sure -fire way of getting a band a front page in the NME/Sounds/Melody Maker. His subsquent commitment to the 'Red Wedge' tour, his pro-socialist comments and anti-Tory lyrics, for me at least, are enough to prove that it was a wnd-up. A class act, The Jam, not just a great singles band, most of the albums stand the test of time too. I also think Weller's solo carreer has been too harshly judged, but that's another story.
i dont know, to me
he always reeks of a tryhard. he was rejected by punk, so he gets pissed off and in 1979 says that they will be voting for thatcher in the election, and that 'the queen is the hardest working woman in the country', and then when they get the chance to be accepted and do Red Wedge he jumps at the chance. just all seems a bit odd.
It's always difficult to get
a true perspective on, for want of a better word, 'celebrities', but I saw him back stage after a Jam gig in Stoke in 1977, and he seemed a genuine enough bloke.
weller is an absolute cunt though
i mean the last time he was on telly he was raving about how great hard-fi are compared to all the other shite out nowadays
yes
but he voted for thatcher and told his fans to in the press.
no
because by then it the monetarist policies of british government were already long established. however thatcher was the person that really got it all started, and so anyone recommending her at the time weller did was obviously a complete fool.
Stop crying.
He was TAKING THE PISS.
Personally
I think they were one of the most over-rated bands ever.
I wasn't around at the time so can't comment on whatever splash they made but for me the songs don't really stand up. They are just a bit too male, I like my pop music with a little less Vespa testosterone and most of the bands they influenced were appalling.
They are, however, a band liked by some people whose taste I respect so, I suppose, I may be wrong. They have never done it for me though.
well
yeah
I never liked The Jam
as they always seemed such miserable bastards. Mainly because Weller was always like the grumpy reactionary old man that he subsequently became. And if the 'Tory' thing was his idea of a joke, then he's even dumber than I always thought he was.
And yes they are influential, but not on anyone who is any good.
I was watching
that Simon Day programme 'Grass' last night and in one of the episodes, they played 'Smithers-Jones' from the album 'Setting Sons'. That's a great tune with a clever lyric...
and just about
the only Jam song not written by Paul Weller.
Did not know that...
ta!!
Real Mods don't listen to The Jam
they are a great band, though.
"But, but,
he voted Thatcher. He voted Thatcher. Cunt!"
Haha
Well everyone knows that that was a wind-up and was related to ideas about mods as the ultimate capitalists (as well as the publicity it garnered). He was just taking the piss. Seems a bit silly to hate his body of work on those grounds. To say he has a "love for thatcher" is just ill-informed nonsense!
This slagging of Weller's solo career is uncalled for.
You're all just going on a tangent, spurred on by eachother's harsh opinions on it.
If you like the Jam, you can't think Weller is THAT 'terribly awful', surely. Sub-par at the worst, but to have such contrasting opinions on music which is pretty similar is gay.
true^^
It's just cos people hear other people hating Paul Weller and think "Oh great something else I can slag off". I don't like it much, but I can see what a talented bloke he is.
I dont think his stuff does sound the same.
that's why it's good. he diversified and explored lots of different areas. good for him I say. He's hated now because he's mainstream, old-hat and oasis-related.
yeah you're right.
it doesn't sound particularly similar. I was agreeing with wrighty's first two lines. I just feel that Weller's solo stuff is really rather diverse (whilst retaining cerain 'hallmarks') and it's impossible to just write the lot off in one fell swoop.
