I think i'm probably a little late on this, but they're fucking good aren't they? I can't seem to listen to them enough, and now i have the album, i know what he's singing as well.

  • I don't particuarlly like them on record.

    But live, they sound immnense.

    • Every third show perhaps

I've seen them three times and only once have they sounded any good. Then again, I also think 65DoS are awful so I'm probably wrong according to most people.

      • What ?

        65dos, awful ?
        What ?
        One more time, what ?

        • I saw them (with YMSS)...

and thought they had really boring chord progressions, repetitive beats and it all just got really boring after a while. I'd have probably loved it in my post-rock discovering days but now I just find it rubbish. The Mad Capsule Markets take everything 65DoS have got and add catchiness and vocals to it so I'd rather listen to them.

And while I'm on Post Rock bands I don't like, Explosions in The Sky have for some reason got popular off three chords, delay pedals and marching drums. They're just a halfway point between Mogwai and Godspeed sucking everything that's good from either of them. And they're immensely dull live.

          But yes. Opinion is opinion.

          Filip @yes_ | 26 Aug '06, 20:26 | X
          • as I said opinion

I heard the first Explosions record when a friend made me a copy saying it was the best new bands around and I kinda liked it. The drums especially. Then I heard the second one and I thought it was ok as well. Then I saw them live and I thought it was again ok but just seemed like Mogwai-lite (Mogwai shows being some of the best gigs I've been to). It just seems really boring to me when I see and hear what they're actually playing, just really bog standard chords with pretty boring effects.

65dos do the same chords with some beats that aren't even remotely as interesting as acts like Amon Tobin, The Mad Capsule Markets and even Aphex Twin so there's no point me listening to that either. I just find it really dull, unoriginal and pointless. It does absolutely nothing for me. I can understand why people like it but I don't, sorry. I think they're a ridiculously overrated band who have done nothing that'll ever be historically relevant.

            • i find eits a bit boring to be honest

              from what i've heard

              • but

65dos were pretty immense when i saw them

                jp100 @jp100 | 26 Aug '06, 20:54 | X
            • 65 days were boring live...

But it was in the hot, smelly, over-crowded barn at Truck. And I couldn't see anything.... so that might be the explination.

              therapyrock @Filip | 26 Aug '06, 20:31 | X
              • Ive only seen them once : (

But it was mind blowing. Probably the best gig ive been to. And I was at radiohead last week. Radiohead are my all time, no doubt, shall never be changed, favourite band, so thats saying something.
I wouldave happily stayed for infinity encores.

                yes_ @Elvrum | 26 Aug '06, 20:44 | X
              • 65dos are shit.

they're mogwai with a 'glitch' button.

                fishplums @yes_ | 28 Aug '06, 16:15 | X
                • ...

They'd be a lot better if all their songs weren't basically interchangable.

                  Stealthy @fishplums | 28 Aug '06, 16:41 | X
              • i completely agree on 65dos

                entirely.

                but i always love YMSS.

                alcxxk @Filip | 28 Aug '06, 17:21 | X
              • i like them on record as well

but i wish i knew the songs a bit better when i saw them.

                jp100 @therapyrock | 26 Aug '06, 20:16 | X
              • yes

I wish I had seen them when they were with 65dos. That wouldave been probably gs`ixgfkhvn`eosigkjhvn (cant be bothered finishing sentence, theyre just good, ok?)

                yes_ | 26 Aug '06, 20:15 | X
                • i've always thought

their recorded output lacks the sheer oomph of their live shows.
                  but, yes, they're ace.
really good at reading as well!

                  guntrip | 28 Aug '06, 13:56 | X
                  • YMSS

have been rather immense each time i saw them. Especially with 65dos. Can't say i've liked much i've heard on record though, it just seems a bit lacklustre compared to their live performances.

Are they still officially called "Youthmovie Sountrack Strategies" or has it really been shortened to "Youthmovies"? (sorry, i know this question has been asked a squijillion times, but i've never got a satisfactory answer)

                    pretty_vacant @guntrip | 28 Aug '06, 14:03 | X
                    • i've never seen an official answer

to it either, but andrew introduced them at truck by the full name, so...

yeah, the recorded stuff is really weedy and lacks the punch of their live shows.

                      guntrip @pretty_vacant | 28 Aug '06, 14:07 | X
                      • "yeah, the recorded stuff is really weedy and lacks the punch of their live shows"

                        WRONG.

in my opinion obviously. i listen to hurrah! quite a lot and it's great. i've seen them live quite a few times too on account of my worryingly geeky 65dos obsession, and their recorded stuff goes quite a long way to matching their live performances. not QUITE all the way though, but then i prefer 90% of bands live to on record anyway.

have i just contradicted myself? ALMOST.

                        utm_usic @guntrip | 28 Aug '06, 14:39 | X
                        • i've seen them many many times now

and i think i'm correct. hurrah! is good but just doesn't have the power they have when they're in front of you blasting your face off and making you dance at the same time.

                          guntrip @utm_usic | 28 Aug '06, 14:52 | X
                          • i have to concede

i have hardly heard anything on record, so can't really pass judgement. And a lot of the time live > on record. Anyone fancy sending me a couple of tracks off Hurrah!?

                            pretty_vacant @guntrip | 28 Aug '06, 16:29 | X
                • they are awesome

ive seen them lots of times. theyre always good.

they were great at leeds too... absolutely amazing. i love it.

                • ymss

were really decent at Reading and the new songs are getting even more complicated and complex! as for 65dos, they're also sick-tings
