is this who would win in a fight?
Then you're probably on a good bet there, yeah.
has a bit of an evil streak
One would just cry and run away, and one would 'eject the zombies from the venue'.
be your best EVER post.
hinestly, but some Elliott Smith songs are really good so I'll go with him.
closely followed by elliott, closely followed by ryan. very far behind followed by bright eyes.
no doubts in my mind. buckley was talented, but his songwriting was nothing next to ryan's. elliot smith wrote quite nice songs, but they werent as good as ryan's, and hes nowhere near being as awesome a singer/musician as ryan. bright eyes rights some great songs, but hes also written a lot of crap, and his good songs still arent as good as those of ryan. i like his voice, its got appeal, but i like ryan's a lot more.
i love them all for entirely different reasons.
it's really just a contest between adams and oberst.
but i think if buckley hadn't gone for his "little swim" it would be him.
but the real issue at stake is:
Sean Adams, who INVENTED DiS
tonight said i looked like Elliot Smith.
the question is:
What Is He On?
i think it was the stripey top.
i think there must be a science that happens when you are drunk and your fingers just type what the more accustomed word is. Yes I was drunk at 7:25am, I know its neither big or clever.
without a doubt
breadfan on this, tim all the way!
the rest are quite, quite bland.
the man releases better albums when he is dead. end of!
Elliott Smith. Maybe Ryan Adams in a few more years.
the rest are all talentless charlatans.
that just makes you sound stupid.
stupid as I'd feel if I listened to Ryan Adams of Bright Eyes for pleasure.
on the offchance you care.
the most prolific, interesting and at times, confusing solo performer of our generation.
whilst he could do with some QA sometimes, he's the more consistent genius, with a back-catalogue that pisses all over the other three.
jeff buckley is not worth the fuss, it's a 'posthumous legend' thing
conor still has yet to truly prove himself
elliot never quite diversified enough for me
Ryan, all the way. i LOVE him.
STop disliking stuff I like.
as half the possible choices are dead, and thus it's very easy not to make a new record that destroys the illusion of your musical qualities when you're dead...
I can see how you'd say that as he has one of those voices that is so distinctive it can make everything sound similar but the music he realeased varied enormously in style from plaintive acoustic stuff to out right pop songs to some stuf that was much heavier.
1. Elliott Smith
Absolutely amazing crafter of pain into beauty and has some of the lushest melodies ever committed to tape. He breaks your heart then seals the crack with hot toffee.
2. Bright Eyes
He has written most of my favourite songs and some of the lushest lyrical twists. Yeah some of his earlier stuff was immature but he has true moments of you-have-to-help-change-the-world that truly get me going and others that make me realise it's ok to feel an natural closeness to death which is also an incredible strong driving force.
3. Jeff Buckley
Has that amazing sentimental ability to make you cry. As I did at breaking point in the bath last week as 'Last Goodbye' blasted from the stereo.
4. Ryan Adams
I don't get the fuss. I've tried but I really don't get it.
Theyre all pretty similar, (counting all the buckley shit that shouldnt have been released posthumously, some of which is engrossing, some of which is most definitely a grave turner)
Adams has a massive catalogue, affecting his hit/miss rate quantity wise,
for me, the "essential" albums released are
Adams- Heartbreaker, The Suicide Handbook, Love Is Hell (full parts 1/2)
Buckley- Sketches For My Sweetheart the Drunk, Live at Sine (2CD),
Oberst, Read Music Speak Spanish, Lifted...,
Smith- Elliot Smith, From A Basement on the Hill
just me though.
Sketches For My Sweetheart the Drunk over Grace just no. I'd probably include Gold in Ryan Adams, I found Love Is Hell boring. Elliot Smith Figure 8, Either Or? Bright Eyes Oh Holy Fools.
But you just listed 4 of My favourite artists.
I LOVE all of them.
Smith > Adams > Eyes > > >
1) Ryan Adams
2) Jeff Buckley
3) Bright Eyes
4) Elliott Smith
I've only heard one Smith song, which is the only reason, but it didn't grab me as much as the rest's did.
Sketches disc one OWNS grace
I think i over listened to grace (which I still like a lot, in the same way I like Gold/Either Or/Letting off the Happiness) for about two years when i got it though, whereas Sketches always sounds fresh.
& I got it in Sydney, so it reminds me of that...
I'd take The Sky Is A Landfill over owt on his debut
he's just been more consistent.
closely followed by bright eyes. the other two, pah they can kiss my....
is better than grace.
I've never really got into Ryan Adams and, whilst Jeff Buckley's debut has some excellent moments, Elliott Smith's music does far more for me.
I have to be honest and say that for some reason I've never listened to enough Bright Eyes to have a valid opinion on him.
it's a fiver in fopp. AMAZING record, overblown (but never -too- overblown) in places yet stripped back in others, and book-ended by two really long tracks, the latter of which is one of the most life-affirming songs i've ever heard.
i loves it.
If I had to choose?
Jeff Buckley's one good song is better than Bright Eyes' one good song. But not quite as good as Elliott Smith's one good song.
I know nothing about Ryan Adams.
Hehe. I've been negative on a thread. GO ME.
Sorry. I'll go now xx
for me there's no contest - it has to be elliott smith.
i've spent the weekend rediscovering the genius of roman candle.
in fact, i think it may have become my favourite elliott smith album even though either/or does have between the bars...
is my new favourite song for this week.
1. Elliott Smith
2. Conor Oberst
3. Jeff Buckley
4. Ryan Adams
I don't need to justify myself, but the only Ryan Adams record I like is Heartbreaker - the rest I find painfully average.
I wonder who is winning!
I couldn't care less about Buckley.
As much as I want to love Smith it never goes beyond a fleeting moment.
It's a tough call between Adams and Oberst though... I love them both a ridiculous amount. I think Adams is more engaging live... and... oh... no. I don't know. I guess I'm more likely to have a night in listening to Bright Eyes... but Ryyyyaaaan...
