I was *this* close to buying it today.
Should I invest?
although it is nowhere near as good as some people would have you believe.
Is it better/worse/similar/dissimilar to "Tweez"?
I don't have that album either, but probably worth asking anyhow...
than Tweez, although they are pretty different. Tweez is interesting more than enjoyable.
I do really like Spiderland, its just it could never live up to all the things I had read about it.
Spiderland is often described as math-rock. It is not. It is noodling. Very very slowly.
I thought it was the first album that established this genre called math-rock.
Plus, I thought noodling was more post-rock than anything else...
That's what I heard. Then I bought it and found that everyone who said that was talking straight out of their arse.
It just sounds like a budget Tortoise. Or a quieter Shellac. But it ain't math.
DO IT. This album is possibly my favourite album ever ever ever. It is AMAZING. do it.
It's a brilliant album. I didn't even know about all the "mastpiece, lost classic, best thing ever blahblahblah" stuff before I bought it, but if you fail to be moved by Washer or Good Morning, Captain, then something's probably wrong with you.
I'm tempted just to buy it on the strength of "Nosferatu Man" (the only song I've heard off the record).
but I also find Mogwai and any other 'postrock' bands boring. This post is not much help.
amazing. especially 'washer'. they are infinately better than mogwai
Why is it so stupid?
Lightning Bolt and The Cheeky Girls - nothing alike.
Slint and Mogwai - nothing alike? Don't think so.
Mogwai are on record as citing Slint as a massive influence, not to mention every music journalist ever comparing the two.
I could sit here for an hour listing similarities in musical style but I don't think there is any need.
I can't believe for a second you can hear Washer and believe that it sounds "nothing like" Mogwai!
I wouldn't have even said anything if you hadn't labelled someone "stupid" for saying something that has been a discussion point for music fans and journalists since Mogwai began! You might disagree, but calling someone stupid in such a dismissive way just makes you look like a bit of a dickhead. I also really do fail to see how someone can say the album Come On Die Young doesn't sound like Slint, at least a bit. Clearly they aren't identical, and they have a lot of differences, but to say they are nothing alike is simply ridiculous.
because the guy before me said 'i also find mogwai and other post-rock bands boring'. which i thought was silly because you can't really compare the two. so we're on the same side buddy.
Also you have to remember what the album did and who it influenced when assessing how "good" it is / was. Of course, if you just want something to listen to and don't care about all that bullshit, well it is still brilliant. Dripping with atmosphere. You have to listen to it LOUD.
Tweez on the other hand is pretty badly recorded and stinks of late 80s - however once you get used to it, it rocks a lot too.
don't take these things so seriously.
I love spiderland but have to admit I prefer Mogwai over slint by quite a way.
Also, having seen Slint at the Forum and Mogwai quite a few times I can also say that in my opinion the mighty 'gwai are a LOT better live.
If you were referring to me, I wasn't angry or anything, just a bit surprised.
I also agree with you about Mogwai being the better live band. Though would they have ever sounded like they do without the existence of Slint? I doubt it.
a personae on people on the internet ain't it?
Sure they would have sounded different, maybe even better!
I love mogai live, just friggin heavy.
Yes, buy Spiderland - I adore the whole thing and I would recommend Tweez as well - if only for Good Morning Captain which must be one of the most extraordinary rock songs of all time.
but, really, I am not sure what point Elvrum was trying to make above. You nearly made me spit my drink out mate. Mogwai have always accepted they sound like Slint. The working title of Like Herod was Like Slint, for godsake. Silly, as I said before.
