give me songs that are sad and beautiful
thanks for that, yeah, that's the sort of thing i meant.
Nina Nastasia - All Your Life / Ugly Face
Nick Drake - Fruit Tree
more to come
"yeah, thats depressing." A song can be sad without being depressing.
Hear you me, Jimmy Eat World
The Baseball Field - In a lonely place (Joy Division cover)
and Music77 - Kameror
you should be able to download both at www.hellosurprise.com

Amy In The White Coat by Bright Eyes
(Thanks to Heliotrope)
As I keep saying, best album ever made!
because of you, haven't got all the way through yet, it's quite long...
When I got it I just listened to part 1 all day everyday for a month before moving on to the next one.
Stanley Clarke - "We Shall Not Be Moved" is the first that comes to mind.
jimmy ruffin - what becomes of the broken hearted
blur - no distance left to run
Was that about breaking up with that chick from Elastica? I would've interpreted more as a joyous party anthem.
I still think it seems almost self-consciously sad though.
So I'll say....
It's a Motherfucker by Eels.
and If You See Natalie. Such sad songs.
Battery In Your Leg
yeah it was about her. My fave ever blur song, very very sad.
Messenger bird's song - bright eyes
Amongst many, many others...
In My Time of Sorrow is in a similarly baroque vein as that Nico song that Brainlove posted... you'll like it!
Black Dollar Bills-Hope Of The States
The Eternal by Joy Division.
Good call on Black Dollar Bills.
I don't really like them anymore but it is a really great song.

The kind of tune that makes you involuntarily sigh and say "oh god!".

this makes me sad. :(
that there are some songs that are written by bands that are clearly about to split up, that are about splitting up, and they are heartbreaking -
Pavement - Ann Don't Cry
The Beatles - Carry That Weight
there are loads more. I made a little compilation of them once. Damn. Erm, I shall think on.
most of everything
but principally, at the moment
I see a Darkness
is tres beautiful.
Gustavo Santaolalla - De Usuahia a la Quiaca
Rad House Painters - Grace Cathedral Park
and My Morning Jacket's 'I Will Be There When You Die'.
Elliott Smith - Waltz #1
Samson by Regina Spektor always gets me - it's the bit that goes "And he told me that I'd done alright and kissed me till the morning light, the morning light
and he kissed me till the morning light"...
"Anbulance" and "Blind" by TV on the Radio make me want to weep too...
"Svo Hljott" by Sigur Ros - I have no idea whet Jonsi is singing about but that Pump Organ part at the beginnning breaks my heart every time...
Ryan Adams & The Cardinals - Silver Bullets
'cause i can't make you love me
and you can't make me stay

Jesus and Mary Chain - About You
Mogwai - Cody
Low - Sunflower
Arab Strap - The Week Never Starts Round Here
The Delgados - No Danger
Bonnie Prince Billy - I See A Darkness
The ballad of old Betsy - The Beach Boys
and state that I don't like the Beach Boys. I think they're too slick and shiny. In fact, I gave my copy of Pet Sounds to Hannah82, who deserves it more than me.
Gregor Samsa - lessening
Most of Nick Drake
Blur - Battery in Your Leg
Dntel - Why I'm so unhappy
Wheat - Don't I hold you
Most of Explosions in the Sky
Red House Painters - Have you Forgotten
Super furry animals - Download

Drop being a favourite.
