Shit, looks like I just spent $600 on my badge...
Anyone else booked up yet? Where you staying?
staying at the hilton opposite the convention center
This year I was three miles out which was a complete nightmare so I'm happily paying a lot more for peace of mind.
i will hopefully be there.
it was a bit of a snap decision, as you need to have a ticket to book a hotel, and the close ones are going fast...
You have to book early to get a decent hotel.
Oh lord how I would love to go.
seriously considering this...
this year - No badge, no hotel. Only decided to go 2 days before the event. He found a room once he got there and got into every show he wanted to see. God bless the English accent abroad.
I went with about two days notice the first year and managed to blag my way into every afternoon party I went to, including the Spin party which was a real "hot ticket" !
As you say, the accent does help (although mine is Scottish) .
If you don't have one of those $600 badges, it's a question of spending ages queueing for the limited number of tickets for the bigger/more popular shows right? So there's still a chance (albeit slim) of getting in...?
You're as well spending the money on a badge as you can pop in and out of shows easily.
If you don't have a badge you'll probably be stuck in the same venue all night rather than going to four or five.
Mind you it's the daytime shows that make up the experience, especially when there's free food and drink involved!
...and lacking the funds for a badge right now! Luckily flights are cheap ish at the moment and I've got free accommodation over there. I'll be in and out of venues all day no doubt so wouldn't be the end of the world if I was stuck in one venue all night I guess. Just trying to ascertain if there's any chance of me getting into night shows without a badge - I'm ok with queueing if limited tickets are put on sale for lucky punters...
I'm not getting anything less than £500 at the moment
...you'd go and buy them, thus depriving me of my cheap flights!
But as I'm a nice guy, for the dates I'm looking at (13/3-23/3), they're around £430 on expedia with UA...
I went via Chicago this year which I thought would be a nightmare.
I had a couple of hours to spare on my there so that was plenty time and on the way back my London flight was only a couple of gates along from where I came in!
but don't think we will be there next year - gutted!
Let's skip out for an MLS game at some point.
I'll be amazing by then.
but fingersss crossssed
Check out STA travel http://www.statravel.co.uk/cps/rde/xchg/uk_division_web_live/
Usually have to be a student or under 26 but some crazy cheap deals on there to the US
so for 2010 SXSW i'll totally be hooking up with DiS peeps and maybe even some couch space.
It's looking VERY likely that I'm going to go to this - has anyone flew with Delta before? Their flights are good value at the minute.
...when I flew with them 7 years ago. No idea now.
I booked my flight to Austin yesterday with Continental - £420 - decent price I think. There are Delta flights for around £400 but the timings aren't as good. Any other airlines are in the £430-470 bracket at the moment. I know Continental fares are going to change at the end of October though so might be worth getting onto these fares now.
is the cheapest I'm finding, on KLM and American Airlines. I'm guessing that waiting for the sales around Xmas and New year is not a good idea?
january sales could be more crazy than ever. or they could just not happen at all.
..are both pretty good, I think KLM is a bit nicer though. I'd keep an eye on the flights though as they do sell out and you'll only be left with the pricey ones in January.
to houston are around £170-£230 at the moment (depending on how horrific the changes you want to endure are), any ideas how expensive it is to get from Houston to Austin (3 hour bus ride) - this is very tempting.
on the Greyhound. I've always wanted to go on the Greyhound too. Hmm, interesting.
i think i'm going to give NYC a miss and maybe go back for ATP in september then, i'm too skint to spend over £400 on flights if I can get there for around £250.
Fancy travelling together?
i'm thinking flying out on Friday 13th, spending a few days in houston, bussing it to austin on the 17th and then coming back to houston and flying home on the 23rd.
Friday 13th! Duh duh duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
This will be my third SXSW and I'm staying at the hilton garden inn, last year I stayed bloody miles out, it was cheap and the bus fare was only 50p but the hour and a half journey got a little tiresome..
.. just get in early and scoff all the free food and booze then pop next door to the next one. But seriously, I think the best one is run by Team Clermont, they always have a good line up.

having Brooner at SXSW.
I'm going to destroy you Brooner. IN THE FACE.
A good website for updates is donewaiting.com, although I should add there's bugger all on it at the moment. Keep checking though!
a friend, whos in a (very) wee band and is possibly going out, said that i could go with him - i wouldn't have a hotel or a pass. Is it worth it?
Well no, you won't get into any shows without one or the other. There are free instores going on but I think if you're trekking half way across the World I think it's worth stumping up for a pass.
so after that its hotel and spending!
It's going to be a bit tight this year but I don't spend much when I'm there anyway.
I'll stock up on the free booze at the fader parties and buy my food from the sandwich shop at the end of 6th Street (as that's what I normally do!).
Not seen anyone listed yet that I'm desperate to see but I'm sure I'll end up watching a variety of big UK bands in small venues, US acts I like, new up and comers and bands that it would be good to photograph.
If Nicole Atkins plays I'll be happy but I'm also hoping Alphabeat show up as I'll be able to watch them in an intimate setting again.
I'm thinking of putting together a very hastily planned trip - I'm looking into flights myself, and have somewhere lined-up to stay, but could do with some advice on what shows/parties are good (to at least try and get in to...)?
According to The Golden Triangle’s MySpace page, there is a Mexican Summer showcase on 3/19 @ Club 1808 with Soft Pack, Crystal Stilts, Crystal Antlers, Vivian Girls, Golden Triangle.
http://my.sxsw.com/ - login, they have started part of the music schedule up. dananananakroyd at dirty dog bar is going to be fun :)
Department of Eagles
Echo and The Bunnymen
Eli paperboy Reed
Jessica Lea Mayfield
Tara Jane O’Neil
the ol' spotify playlist, which I've been slowly adding more stuff to, go contribute artists, 3 songs for each if possible:
it lists a lot of the bands playing by day time and venue now so you can get a half arsed schedule together.
It seems to update most days with Katy Perry at Stubbs showing up today.
I'm sure most DIS's wont head along but I'll be there hopefully for the first three songs at least.
I fly out in 9 days!
looks like friday night at stubbs is going to be metallica 0_o
Guitar Hero Metallica
Bassnectar 8:00 p.m.
Silversun Pickups 9:00 p.m.
DJ Shadow (exclusive DJ set) 12:20 a.m.
The Splinters sound ace.
pretty alright :)
Looking forward to seeing Nico Vega again http://www.myspace.com/nicovega they were the first band I saw last year on the wednesday, were rather ace.
...should be good. I am mostly looking forward to Jason Lytle, Jimmy Webb And The Webb Brothers, Eli Paperboy Reed, Dent May, eating lots of buttermilk pies and drinking many many Oreo shakes... mmm..
I'm still unsure who I'm going to be watching over the four days.
My only deffo's are Erin McCarley at La Zona Rosa and Sara Bareilles if she's headling the Hotel Cafe evening.
I suppose I'll have to spend the first few hours of Friday evening at Stubbs if I want to photograph Metallica (which is looking like they'll be there) but I doubt I'll stay for their full set.
It looks like Katy Perry has pulled out of her Stubbs slot so that's not so good.
I'm looking forward to seeing lots of bands, even though there's no new acts making me desperate to see them.
on the thursday seems to be back, invite only though - http://www.playboy.com/magazine/features/rock-the-rabbit/
not long to go now :)
at emos on the 13th, $10 with octopus project, micah p hinson, the drones, sleepy sun and more
looking forward to that, love what i've heard of sleep sun :)
sitting in a hotel room, feeling rough as fuck, waiting for 24 to come on TV!
I have to wake up at 4.30am US time to make a 9.30 phone call to the UK so my sleep is going to be crap so I'll still be rough tomorrow.
I'm sure a few beers will help though...
