any good? this would combine my wanting to go to Berlin thing with some decent music...
and am very very excited
I fly out to Berlin a week tomorrow for a week of partying before the fest. Can't wait!
i'm thinking of going this year if the lineup's good enough. roastthemonaspit, can you tell me what it was like last year? ie. travelling to the site and food and drink prices once there? and anything else, obvs.
The festival itself I reviewed here: http://festivals.musicomh.com/melt-2008-1_0708.htm (I really need to proof read - "wondrous three minutes of wonderment", dear lord)
The other parts of the festival I was slightly less happy about: there is a bus that ran from Berlin centre straight to the festival which was handy except the organisation was TERRIBLE and people who had pre booked their buses (as we had) weren't given any priority. The journey back was even worse, being told to go one place for our bus, then another and another (all in the rain and having barely slept in 3 days) - eventually we got on a half empty bus which drove away despite there being some 200 people waiting! It was all a shambles. I wrote a letter of complaint but heard nothing back, unsurprisingly perhaps. Hopefully they've sorted it out. There is a train station nearby apparently but I don't know a great deal about it. Travel details should be on the website.
Another thing was the campsite: anything was allowed to be bought in which is good in terms of booze and what not but there was a serious lack of security / any staff clearing up meaning glass everywhere - by the Sunday the area was a complete mess and walking round was at times dangerous.
Food was pretty good, typical festival prices. If you can bring some supplies yourself, there are shops not too far away but we never bothered to go as we didn't have the energy, the beer is reasonably priced at the bars and, like in most of Germany, you pay a 1 Euro deposit for your beer glass and you have to keep returning it when you want a drink, as to stop litter. You get the Euro back when you hand it back at the end of the night.
The music doesn't get going until 6pm and you're not allowed in the arena until then so unless you sleep well in a camping situation there's not much to do during the day but have a dip in the pond and get drunk. Which is fun obviously. The weather wasn't great when we went (one minute glorious sunshine, the next thunderstorms! with little warning) which was a shame as apparently it's usually boiling.
I also found quite a lot of the people there rude but that's my own complaint and nothing to blame the festival on!
Hmm, what else. If you're into class A's at all then get them in Berlin beforehand because it's pretty much impossible to find any there.
Despite all this I did have fun. The setting is beautiful and the music was really good and eclectic. I doubt I'd go back though.
God that was a rant. Sorry.
