needs it's own thread really. How amazing were these guys! Anyone else see them?
Not amazing though.
but i thought they were ACE.
I couldn't hear stuff well. I still fucking enjoyed it totally.
The main reason I thought it was rubbish was that Tras (I think) has a distinctive keyboard layer that the guy on the left plays and it was totally lost. It's one of the great little moments and I was sad to not hear it.
I have a picture at home that I didn't put in my Truck list.
They didn't play Hi/Lo again so that wasn't good.
but ended up in the Barn expecting a bunch of reptitive half-hearted experimental sounds.
After a pretty slow build up to the set I found myself being totally absorbed by them.
My puny body was shaking and moving more than it did to any other band over the weekend.
Yes Stu - these guys were TOTALLY amazing.
It's the 3 time i've seen in as many months and they are still totally involving. Amazing.
Hope they come back to the UK on tour soon
but Foals weren't far behind.
And believe me, I was right a the front! they were brilliant! absolutely excellent.
though damn them for making me want to spend money I haven't got!
I was standing with my hands on the barrier and it sounded great to me!
wine and vodka and cider :S
it's BAD stuff.
i meant vodka and cider together. i'm not sure if you did..
but both were in my body within a few hours of each other
considering they were playing in a barn, i don't think it was ever going to be excellent.
i didn't register anything wrong with it but i was a) drunken and b) don't know any of their songs anyway.
someone told me they were rubbish on record, is that true?
good but not amazing. still, i'm glad i got to see them at all after getting mega-squished waiting with the masses outside.
I didn't so I think I love the records more.
Also you saw a set with a lot of new material so you'll almost certainly love the B + C EP set, which is great and definitely worth getting.
also, I'd seen them already play Luminaire and Lock 17 this year. The Astoria sound wasn't great but the barn was worse in middle where I was.
I am also geeky about the bits in the songs I like: I like that keyboard bit a lot so I was really listening out for it. :D
and they were really good.
gah, i wish i'd been at truck.
but i'd quite like to have gone to truck too.
far less stressful
truck > dour. easily.
i'm not being argumentative. i'm just interested. i didn't go to truck this year so i don't really know. maybe i just really enjoyed dour because of the novelty of being in a foreign country. omg!!11 they speak a diffrent langwidge!!11 etc.
the atmosphere quite intimidating at Dour. There was a lot of "hilarious" prank playing on innocent passers by. It's not funny. It makes people feel uncomfortable. And a lot of people were so rude! Walking right into you and not even acknowledging it, and demanding money for the stressful task of holding a roll of toilet paper (when my friend refused the woman called her a prostitute!) Add to that the soaring heat and the DUST. The music was ace granted, especially after dark when the place finally seemed more chilled out, but I was happier on the Eurostar home.
i don't remember encountering any hilarious prank playing. there were some people playing with a frisbee in the club marquee tent who kept hitting me. that was annoying and rude.
the dust was also incredibly annoying. i found it difficult to breathe while walking around outside, and arab strap on the saturday night was pretty bad for dust too!
i think i conveniently forgot about all the annoying things because the music was so good. the food was ridiculously expensive though. i'm pleased we took enough of our own food to feed ourselves for at least the first two days.
maybe the fact i couldn't understand what anyone was saying meant that i wasn't intimidated. or maybe i'm just well hard. or not.
i should probably structure my posts a bit better than this, but i can't really be bothered.
to me, in the end, festivals are SO MUCH more than just the music. The music at Dour was largely very good - although some of the sets were just TOO long, I often prefer a half-hour/forty minute set for better impact. Although there were 20/30 fantastic bands, there were also many many utterly shit bands playing.
I found the atmosphere inhospitable. Being social was largely limited by me speaking no french whatsoever. I love rain, there was heat. I love green-ness there was dust. Our tent was a 25 minute walk from the arenas, making it a complete pain to get to/from the booze and food we had bought. There was a lack of waterpoints and showers. The heat meant that I couldn't sleep past 9am as the tent became boiling, so I couldn't stay up all night dancing because I would get so tired.
So really, my main issue was heat. And not speaking french.
I enjoyed dour, but going to truck again just confirms why it was an infinitely better experience.
and didn't see Battles at either
I loled at that to!
I REALLY wanted to see. They didn't let me down. Not even nearly. Super-Ace-o!
away from the rest of the kit. just looked funny when he hit it.
Can we make sure we make him feel pain next time we meet him, just to make the point?
zach hill = soooo much better.
