FUTURE OF THE LEFT @ MOHO LIVE - 18TH JULY
Scrappy Welsh noise rock trio Mclusky was one of the bright spots in the British indie scene's post-Brit-pop hangover, releasing three appealingly noisy albums, 2000's My Pain and Sadness Is More Sad and Painful Than Yours, 2002's Mclusky Do Dallas, and 2005's The Difference Between Me and You Is That I'm Not on Fire, before an acrimonious split in 2005, apparently due to intra-band tensions due to an incident on the trio's 2004 American tour where the band's van and equipment were stolen.
During the same period, Welsh electro-punks Jarcrew released two albums, 2002's Breakdance Euphoria Kids and 2003's Jarcrew, before also splitting in early 2005, reportedly due to the drummer finding religion. While Mclusky bassist Jon Chapple went off to form Shooting at Unarmed Men, the trio's remaining members, singer and guitarist Andrew Falkous and drummer Jack Egglestone, hooked up with Jarcrew singer and keyboardist Kelson Mathias and bassist Hywel Evans to form a new fusion of the two bands.
Mclusky were a great cult indie band, but Future Of The Left are forging their own identity.
The first official word of Future Of The Left came in March 2006 when the new band set up a MySpace page. Although eagerly anticipated, new music wasn't forthcoming until June, when four home-recorded demos were posted on the site.
Of them, The Lord Hates A Coward was promised to be the opening song in the band's set. Stick To What You Slip and The Big Wide O were both demos that fell from grace. Small Bones Small Bodies was the fourth song.
"Sometimes we dream about shows. Wet dreams, but at the crucial moment... nothing. We sit/lie/crouch, mouths agape and dry, silently screaming at the sky" Andy Falkous
The band also announced a five-date tour in September 2006, playing in London, Brighton, Southampton, Bath and Cardiff, with more to come.
On 2 July 2006, Future Of The Left played a seven-song debut gig at Cardiff's Clwb Ifor Bach. Using the moniker The Mooks Of Passim, they were on the bottom of a bill also featuring RocketGoldStar and headliners Frommars.
Their debut single, Fingers Become Thumbs!, was released in January 2007. Adeadenemyalwayssmellsgood, also on vinyl and download, followed in June that year, ahead of the debut album, Curses.
Although they suffered a period of writers' block, their second album, Travels With Myself And Another, was released in June 2009.
