Acts confirmed for World International John Peel Day 2009
Airport Girl (Solo Acoustic set)
Legendary Fortuna Pop! act began over a decade ago and have garnered significant press, radio play and fans. "Frontman Rob Price still sounds like the miraculous bastard child of Ian Curtis and Conor Oberst..." - Subba-Cultcha
You ever seen someone crowdsurf in a living room? BAD GUYS have. You ever seen Jared from The Melvins force his way through your window to get to your gig? BAD GUYS have. You ever trashed a place so bad it needs to be rebuilt from scratch? BAD GUYS have.
Veterans of 5 Peel Sessions, Americana Beatnik Filmstars have played live all over the place, with bands you will have never heard of, and others like The Flaming Lips, Blur, Hood, Guided By Voices, The Wedding Present, Lush, The Fall …etc, etc, etc that you will have. Like a cross between Pavement and The Silver Jews, with hints of Violent Femmes, but with a unique English twist. "They should be made a National institution! ...or instutionalised!" Losing Today
A songwriter from London. Born in Hammersmith in 1981. Lived all over since then. Written many songs in between. Currently recording an album called 'Avocado Chip' which will be released in 2009.
Former Utopia (Karaoke Room Stage)
Radio 6/Resonance FM featured East London born, X-Lazarus Clamp bassist is a genre defying intelligent edgy song smith that producing the kind of mortally sad, black humoured alt. folk, gigging with the likes of Chris Brokaw, The Thalia Zedek band, Swell, Mick Turner (Dirty Three) P.W Long, and David Grubbs. "like (smog) on holiday in shellac" DIS
Frivalous laura (Karaoke Room Stage)
The Welsh born, London based artist combines far reaching influences from Kate Bush to Bjork via Tim Burton to create a cinematic, experimental pop sound all her own. “Atmospheric, evocative…bends music into a shape I haven’t imagines before” Tom Robinson Show, BBC 6 Music
Australian who relocated to Berlin from Sydney in 2003 with her band MINIT. As Jasmina Maschina. (Staubgold) she melds the most simple and innocent chord progressions of time-honoured folk music with a noisenik’s attraction to repetition, drone and lofi nowaver slocore gold. 'Superb debut album of beautiful folk guitar music from Berlin-based Machina.... This is straight-ahead folk filtered through an imaginative electro-prism that knocks Cat Power into a cocked hat.' Kansai Time Out
KING SALAMI & THE CUMBERLAND 3
The King howls like Screaming Jay Hawkins with Bo Diddley chasing his coat-tail and with Andre Williams trying to offer up some of his bacon fat.
A rare ability to combine the smoky, nocturnal atmospherics conjured by PJ Harvey or Portishead or the Velvet Underground with a pop sensibility... sets her head and shoulder above the singer-songwriter masses, as individual a voice as Cat Power or label mate JAWP. “Madam is a real find!” The Guardian
Maggie8 is the main project of Hood’s Mark Wright. Unlike the brooding ambient underbelly of Hood, Maggie8 is a blast of joyous melodic escapism that combines Beirut, The Beach Boys with traditional English and Indian folk. A beautiful explosion of male/female harmonies sung with added banjo & trumpet backdrop, Maggie8 are a top tip for 2009. “Nearest comparisons are the High Llamas meets Panda Bear jamming with Beirut....something's definitely developing here. Well recommended” Norman Records
MJ Hibbett and the Validators
In their ten years together MJ Hibbett & The Validators have performed live on Radio One, had a Record Of The Year in Rolling Stone, an Album Of The Day on 6Music, released one of the first ever viral videos, toured up and down the UK and even featured in an Edinburgh Fringe Festival show, all while maintaining complete independence from record labels. They're old school indie, belligerently optimistic, and will have a pint.
Pavement meets The Fall three piece from Lancashire who spark up a satircal and caustic yet pretty catchy off kilter dirge and some of the best lyrics you’ll hear this year. The band are currently getting a load of airplay on John Kennedy's XFM show and are soon to be featured in Dazed and Confused!!!!!
All female trio from Tokyo Japan who exude 50’s garage punk, strange songs like ‘Where is David Bowie’ and charmingly zany stage banter. “the new Queens of Cute” Artrocker
Russell and the Wolf Choir (Karaoke Room Stage)
Romford born love lorn poet that plays a sweet sounding acoustic americana pop a cross between like Kevin Devine kissing Jason Molina on the lips, humming a karate song.
The latest band from Amelia Fletcher and Rob Pursey, both of whom previously played in a whole series of Peel favourites: Talulah Gosh (1986-88), Heavenly (1989-96) and Marine Research (1997-99). “In a nicer parallel universe, Tender Trap’s Amelia Fletcher is the most influential artist of her day” NME
One man math rock band Sam Knight, Taut, chugging guitar loops layer up with frenetic tapping patterns that interweave in spiraling complexity before near sub-atomically precise, powerhouse drumming.
Leeds based real delta blues guitarist and sounds like a modern day Muddy Waters or Howlin' Wolf.
