Feeling discontented in other musical projects, 20-year-old Max Mansson started writing songs as "Air Castles" in the summer of 2008 and shortly after decided to take some of those songs out of his bedroom and into the studio. This resulted in a debut EP that Rock Sound magazine calls "fantastic" and refers to as "sublime crystalline indie ... that will appeal to fans of Jeniferever, Sigur Rós, Death Cab For Cutie and Band of Horses alike."
Air Castles' debut EP "Night and Day" was recorded and produced at Tonteknik Recording in Umeå, Sweden, by Magnus Lindberg of Cult of Luna and released in December 2008 on Max's own label - Winter Hymns Records.
The EP has received praise in the UK, Europe and USA and has helped Air Castles to play in Spain, Germany, tour the UK, achieve a US licensing contract and get endorsements from Orange Amplifiers and Roland

"Those much loving of Men An Tol, Mellow Candle and indeed the Owl Service / Hobby Horse collective will find much to swoon about here, featuring a wind weaving cortege of banjos, wooden spoons and other strangely archaic instruments ’the Saddle Song’ is a beguilingly bracing slice of ramshackle woodland rustics, a pagan procession if you like festooned with a deep south funereal march like guile that’s been strangely relocated to the wiles of Wicker Man land. Described by Mary herself as a ’pub shanty’ this crafted relic from a forgotten musical heritage combines enchantment, mystery and a sweetly alluring charm of timeless reverie which if you happen to pass up on will result in you self administering repeat arse kicking routines from here till the next winter solstice. You have been warned."
"Jonjo Feather continues his tirade of darkly romantic penned pop. There's something very intimate to Jonjo's vocal delivery, surrounded by a slurry of guitar laden rifts, 'Taxi' is my Christmas number one." i-D
