Unofficially, Bristol and east London are twinned musical towns, the sound of both being heavy, sparse, dubbed-out plates of bass and drum, from the just-cut whites of dubstep back through d'n'b and jungle, all the way to the original JA sources. Ralph Cumbers - Bass Clef - is the human manifestation of this secret geographical synching, having lived, worked, recorded and performed in both places. Recording analogue basslines, and whipsmart drum programming onto four-track tape, Bass Clef is the sound of structure created, Black Ark-style, on the fly in the mixdown through guitar pedals and FX units. Tricky like AFX but as warm and disarming as a bear hug off the Pastels.
“Anyone still numb to dubstep's charms would be advised to enter here, as Cumbers
skillfully laces the echo-tech of Kode9 with warm Cologne electronic minimalism and ecstatic skittering of Four Tet.” Uncut
"This is without doubt one of the finest experimental dub step releases of 2006. This veers close to electronica in places and is essential if you like Kode 9, Burial or Rhythm And Sound" Time Out
RAZMATAZ LORRY EXCITEMENT
Inspired by the likes of Cassius, LCD Soundsystem and Soulwax, RLE produce the kind of throbbing electro that reduces dancefloors to atoms and clubbers to wildly-vibrating primordial elements. RLE has supported the likes of the Klaxons, Shychild, Crystal Castles and Errors and performed at Reading and Leeds plus Manchester’s In The City last year.
"In a year short on suprises, the weekends most unlikely truimph belongs to a Geordie on the unsigned stage calling himself Razmataz Lorry Excitement. His bonkers dance beats and Prince falsetto pulls a large crowd in a contest otherwise carried by Las Vegas Killers and Glasvegas" - The Guardian
"Smart Daft Punk-esque dancefloor electro with a retro edge and a punkish sensibility."New Noise
Hot City melds together his love of UK and US dance music, taking cues from UKG/2Step and early rave, splicing it with the raw energy of early Chicago, Detroit and New York house music; aiming straight at the dance floor, his heavily swung rhythms, shuffling snares, and tight edits roll with deep bass punch and classic synth stabs, at once evoking memories of bygone eras, yet absorbing contemporary production and memes to create some wholly modern steppa's!
“This is pure house goodness and should be compatible with any of your related sub genres, get spinning! Tip!” Boomkat
Chelmsford’s only independent record shop will treat us to the full spectrum of the universal breakbeat playing the best in breakz, drum & bass, dubstep, electro, house and minimal tech.
