Hotsy Totsy Nagasaki is:
The enigmatic Belfast trio’s long-awaited new record produced, like their debut, by Andy Miller (Mogwai, Scout Niblett, Arab Strap, Sons & Daughters) - its every bit as combustible, melodic and touching as you would expect of this very special band. Fans will love the greater breadth of Charlie’s song writing (‘Black Albino’ is the kind of small-town character-study Michael Stipe mastered back in the days of ‘Fables of The Reconstruction’; ‘Central Line’, an unsettling and timely take on a disturbed mind moving through the London Underground); the added colour to the arrangements (Mariachi horns, banjos, strings, accordions); and maybe even the sense that these one-time angels now have seriously dirty faces (‘Bone Song’ is a great, sing-along ode to drunkenness and regret.). Newcomers, meanwhile, will simply discover a band that can deliver uplifting power pop (‘Ocean’) as convincingly as wide screen art-rock (‘New Kings’) and low-lit heartbreakers (‘Urchin’) – and may be moved to wonder where Desert Hearts have been all their lives.
