William: Self In Fiction
It's a bit early to be hearing bands influenced by Johnny Foreigner... isn't it?
Perhaps, but the so-hot-right-now Birmingham trio are given a hearty 'thanks' on the sleeve of London-based trio William’s debut LP. The similarities extend to more than just the number of people in the band, too: both borrow liberally from the Pavement school of lo-fi indie-rock thrills, and their frontmen share a tendency to yelp as though their sensitive bits have been jammed hard in a vice.
No bad thing, in Jo-Fo's case at least. William (DiScovered) shouter Gavin Housley, on the other hand, treads dangerously close to Wild Beasts-esque Marmite vocal territory. In other words, some will revel in his delivery, others will reach for the off switch - as this writer almost did during the very first chorus of otherwise enjoyable opener 'Five Minute Wonder' - but, hell, at least it's something a little bit off the beaten track.
Musically, they're nothing if not tight. Consummate, even. Also, any band with a song called 'Whoreditch' deserves at least a little instant kudos. Trouble is, on said track, Housley's vocal strays into Prince-during-his-most-indulgent-period caterwaul territory. Ouch. There's plenty here to like, though. 'DSI', for instance, is a fizzing slice of 'floor-friendly punk-funk that certainly gets the blood pumping early on - before, that is, the pace slows and it descends into a less interesting noise-jam.
And that's pretty much the pattern Self In Fiction follows. For sure, William do it best when they're playing fast and loud. Rhythmic, overdriven guitars, from one hook straight to the next... and it's decent stuff. See 'Thomowski', see 'Errr...Lee' and hear, certainly, the aforementioned Johnny Foreigner influence. That's precisely why Jo-Fo's record is such a success: the pace barely drops, bang bang bang, one 'hit' (in quality terms) followed by another.
Self In Fiction isn't in the same league as that - there's a bit too much meat on this bone - but it's a decent enough debut LP. And it sure beats the shit out of Look See Proof's recent, kind-of-similar-sounding effort.

"whoreditch"
lame. shooting fish in a barrel. plenty of good stuff in that part of london. as if william aren't as derivative as the libertines-type bands that play there.
i saw william and their bassist was cool-
I know next to nothing about William
(although people who seem to have decent taste in music seem to like them so I might check 'em out at some point) but no-one deserves kudos for calling a song "Whoreditch". It's a terrible name.
a) It's a an obvious pun.
b) It's an easy target.
c) It's been three years since Shoreditch was satirised in Nathan Barley. Surely slagging it off is a bit passe.
d) Songs about "trendy" aspects of the indie scene are pretty much the most insular, uninspired and parochial subject matter any indie band can come up with.
e) They're also completely uneffective as they're only of interest to the cool indie scenester kids anyway who delight in the scene they know about being slagged off (and wind up feeling they're incredibly cool 'cos they're cool enough to listen to records that slag the cool scenesters off which makes 'em cooler than the other scenesters)
As I say I've not heard the album and good luck to the band (I clicked on the review 'cos I'was interested to find out what the album's like and don't want to get them in general) but "whoreditch" is an awful, awful, awful title and it really depresses me an intelligent music reviewer would think otherwise.
-
But
it's not actually about Shoreditch:
-
You forget:
This is Internets. It is the place of Jumping To Conclusions.
-
Of course...
Well, who cares. theyre still a great band, no matter what anyone says otherwise, informed or not.
I do find it depressing that someone would take a lot of time to point out why a songtitle is shit, instead of finding out what said band sound like. Them the breaks, i suppose

This page is a music review.
The area below is for comments on the review. I commented on the review. There's nothing implicity stating I have to comment on the music.
I've heard William before - people were talking about them and I listened to some stuff on their Myspace. I just can't remember anything about them or exactly what the music sounded like.
-
-
-
Fair enough but it's the conclusion one would clearly jump to
And a terrible, terrible title for a song...
-
-
-
?
And derivative of what exactly? I can't think of one band they sound like.
The Johnny Foreigner comparison is lazy too. Plus they pre-date them...
-
I agree
They are certainly different enough to the majority of bland groups around at the moment, which gives them a huge head start. I understand how some people wouldn't like the yelpiness of the vocals, but again that's a sign of a band that polarises opinion, which is preferable to something that is, y'know, just nice.
I don't get the JF comparison really, either.

This might be my favourite post I have ever read on DiS:
"lame. shooting fish in a barrel. plenty of good stuff in that part of london. as if william aren't as derivative as the libertines-type bands that play there.
i saw william and their bassist was cool"Critical incisors so sharp you can only pity the fool that has to brush them.
-
i wasn't criticising william
they're alright, i went to see them in oxford, but making fun of shoreditch (which is what the review congratulated them for, even it's not the meaning behind the song) is just indie snobbism

Hmmmm...
Johnny Foreigner???? We’ve been around for a lot longer than them and we are no way influenced by them. They do obviously kick ass though and we do love them but we are not influenced by them in any way! If the reviewer had read the press release, they would know who we are influenced by. Still I think it’s a decent enough review even if it was only awarded 6/10.
Whoreditch is about an old hookers graveyard in the east end. Maybe you should have a listen to the song. I think it’s a great title. Keep you converse on mate!
-
Wild Beasts?
Has Rob Webb just looked at who our friends are on Myspace???
-
Nevermind
At least Wild Beasts and Jo' Fo' are good. Great in fact. Your album and theirs are my favourites of the year ( alongside War on Drugs and Wave Pictures). And you are officially 3 better than Ashlee Simpson, which is a pretty good thing to be.
-
-
...
a) obviously you think it's a great title or else you wouldn't have written it. That clearly goes without saying.
b) I do regret publically criticising the song title based on an incorrect assumption of what it's about.
c) Nonetheless I'm not the only one incorrect in my assumptions. I have never at any point in my life worn converse and don't intend to start.
-
-
Oh yeah, there was a d) too
The subject matter for what Whoreditch actually is about according to above interview does actuallly sound potentially interesting.
Maybe I should have a listen to the song. Is it on your Myspace or anywhere?
-
converse
I didn't mean anything offensive by it,so sorry. Whoreditch isn't on our MySpace but I think you can still find a 3 year old demo version of it here. http://www.thebluelightdistrict.com/artists/?artist=2&artisttype=0
-
Cheers!
Will have a listen later.
I know you didn't mean it in an offensive way - I just wanted to make clear my complaints weren't 'cos I'm a bitter disgrunted scenester. Which I'm not. Probably.
I honestly am sorry about criticisng your song title - to be honest it was more the reviewer praising it than the title itself (in the sense that I was under the mistaken impression it was another "Burn Koko"/"Death to the Indie Disco"-esque song which, whilst I've nowt against either of those songs per se and one of those two bands I genuinely like, there've been so many of recently, it seemed silly to see a band being praised for doing it). Which you obviously weren't doing anyway which did make my comment somewhat pointless.
-
That's alright
Youmake a good point!
It's better to listen to the songs on our MySpace though rather then old demos on that other website.http://www.myspace.com/williamtheband

-
It's a good listen, pretty consistent too.
The vocals really make it for me.
-
10/10
The vocals rock! poor review!
-
-
This actually makes me really sad
Of all the places that could appreciate William, Drowned in Sound should, but you haven't. That makes me sad :(
-
this review is so badly researched,
if at all researched (looks like all you did was go on the bands myspace and looked at their top mates, and didnt even read an interview on THIS SITE with them) that I cant even be arsed having a go at it, but I think it's a great fucking album and hopefully people will pay attention.
-
and then hopefully buy it.
so they can make another one...
So, if anyone is interested in buying it, go here:
-
I bought it in Mighty Lewisham the other week.
I don't actually remember buying it, so it was a nice surprise amongst the horror of the next morning.
-
so so so sad
It really is. It is a poorly researched review and it IS sad that a website like this one didn't get it. The guy hasn't even mentioned the lyrics, which for me are the most appealing about this band.
This album sits on my top 10 of the year so far for sure. Don't pay any attention to this review - Do as everyone is saying and check it out for your self.

LAZY,LAZY,LAZY
never heard jonny foreigner, dont want to,suppose it makes a change from the dinosaur jr/pavement comparisons eh?
-
I love these guys..
And their music. It'd be a glistening 9/10 from me. I do see the love 'em/hate 'em vocal thing, but I fall into the former camp.
-
actually
i have heard jonny foreigner, the song about husker du ,right?another more valid comparison right there
-
Let's Wrestle did the song about Husker Du
but at least we've got all the best bands in the country covered here now.
-

Popular Workshop? I've heard the album and it's amazing!
-
Stop it,
you're making me moist.
