Rising from the ashes of defunct pop quartet The Beta Band, The Aliens are the latest band about town brandishing psychedelic pop, wielding ramshackle guitars and twee lyricism with a nod to The Flaming Lips’ recent output. However, there seems to be something missing...
For me, a good pop song needs substance as well as the indispensable hook, something which this single lacks. It’s a fairly simple affair, meandering around the boundaries of mediocrity, redeemed slightly by the fact that it’s fun. But fun doesn’t always cut it, right? The vocals are, at best, annoying, and I don’t feel the need to listen to it again. Sadly, 'The Happy Song' will be forever lost under a swarm of forgotten promos.
Despite its shortcomings, there’s no denying that ‘The Happy Song’ is, well, a happy song. However, before we all succumb to their happiness, The Aliens need to wield a little more magic into their next release to warrant repeated listens.
