Another collision of Jam-type polemics and Kinksian riffs probably isn't what the world needs right now, but before you aggravate that migraine by ramming your cranium through next door's garage, read on: you might not be THAT disappointed.
As with Weller's earliest (and best) incarnation, The On Offs are a three-piece whose cravats, feather cuts and long, dark rainmacs give the game away before a note is heard. To be fair though, both 'This Town' and its flipside 'Grow Your Own' offer a more varied progression on the usual 1-2-3-go, we-own-a-few-Clash-records-and-you're-gonna-know-it standard fare.
The title track is a speed-fuelled romp through the highs and lows - mainly the lows - of their hometown of Northampton. Pretty much par for the course then, but things get a tad more interesting with_ 'Grow Your Own'_, which sounds like Ray Davies guesting with the Buzzcocks in some dark room by the Manchester Ship Canal.
While it won't win any awards for originality, this single is still worth checking out for that pre-Saturday night out quick fix.
