Liverpool’s Multi Purpose Chemical aim to take on the tiresome metal scene by stressing positive action as opposed to senseless whining - and by rocking out and entertaining a few people along the way. Which makes, y’know, sense, and is a refreshing and welcome change from hearing a band being angry about being, like, forced to tidy your bedroom, ma-aaan. Add to this the fact that MPC approach their righteous ire with a sense of humour as well as a sense of rage, and one can’t help but applaud.
The music to which all this is set mixes System of a Down’s unexpected gear-shifts with RATM’s passion, drive and ability not to make me want to drown kittens (SoaD do not make me happy), and also has something of the funk to it. Being most definitely of the metal persuasion it’s not quite my beverage, but MPC have an integrity and humour which I can’t help but be glad is out there adding a dash of proportion to the scene’s metallic whine.
