British Sea Power are undoubtedly the envy of their peers - young, intelligent, enthusiastic, full of original ideas and the main cause for so many wetting their pants with excitement. Or at least, that’s what we’re led to believe is the case in the States, as MTV's banned it in case there is an epidemic of people unable to control their bodily fluids after hearing Yan sigh: “all this excitement gets us a little wetter, wetter_.”
But knicker-soaking aside, 'Please Stand Up' demonstrates just how far they have come. It’s a reflective little number exploring Yan’s country lad roots, boosted with a sunshine melody and a boisterous guitar riff. What’s more apparent is a tighter sound and stronger, husky vocals that continues the same magic as past gems like 'Carrion'. Be sure, this is yet another top 20 hit, giving us a sigh of relief that sometimes there is a glimmer of hope in such a soulless industry.
