Deface

The Pighed E.P.

Label: Ubermusik

1886
DiSvsMatt by Mat Hocking June 9th, 2002

DEFACE apparently stands for David Earth Freak Altamont Christ Experience *and this 3-track EP is the first release in over 3 years from these acclaimed goth-metal noise-merchants. Including members of *Killing Joke *and *Tony Iommi’s band Deface is fronted by the seemingly scary-looking Christian Sargent, a man who performs with his very own _Pig’s head _on his shoulders whilst screaming directly in your face. Nice.

Musically they tinker with an atmospheric metal style that adopts ‘ancient’ analogue synth noises, samples, tape loops and a drill. Yep, these guys are off their heads and _The Pighed EP _is most definitely a dark and nasty piece of work. The fact that Mr Sargent sounds a little like *Jello Biafra *gone industrial further serves to fuel your fear of this band.

Their last album was given the full 5Ks in Kerrang but I’m afraid these 3 tracks contain a little too much goth-metal dramaticism for my ears. Fans of this genre will probably lap it up, but having said that there is a bonus track here that harks back to a more 80s rock sound that’s more up my street. Whatever, on the strength of these tracks and the enclosed live pics Deface promise to no doubt be an entertaining live proposition.
