From afar, Metropolis looks like the ideal place to live, but deeper under the surface there is unrest. When Maria, the person who is meant to control the workers, is kidnapped and replaced by a robot, the utopian dream looks like it may come to an end.

Fritz Lang’s 1926 German sci-fi classic, is re-released in cinemas this week. Cert: PG

8 Mile is the story of Jimmy, a white rapper from the black side of the 8 mile devide in Detroit. After Jimmy splits up with his girlfriend, he moves back in with his single mother. While Jimmy holds down a job in a steel factory, he tries to build up the nerve to enter a rapping 'battle' and earn the respect of his peers..

Starring Eminem in his screen debut, Kim Basinger, Brittany Murphy and Taryn Manning. Directed by the fantastic Curtis Hanson (LA Confidential and Wonderboys)

Cameron Crowe’s take on young American singles, is released to buy on DVD on 20th January. Singles was released in 1992, Crowe went on to make Jerry Maguire, last years Cruise/Cruz lurve fest Vanilla Sky and the utterly fantastic rock rites of passage movie, Almost Famous.

Expect cameos from the likes of Pearl Jam and fellow director, Tim Burton.
