ABC Teens

Super Sexy

Label: Release Date: 23/12/2001

rubbafish by Colin Weston December 23rd, 2001

When a band openly describe themselves as 'The world's SEXIEST all girl punk band', you are obviously going to make pre-conceptions and with the ABC Teens, they are affirmed within seconds.

Opening track Supersexy Boys comes across like a lyrically simplified 'Eight Arms To Hold You' era Veruca Salt... especially with the ending of a seductive sigh and 'Yeah' to end the track...

'Put My Love To The Test' is on a completely different tangent. A slow, mellow track reminescent of the Foo Fighters ballad 'Walking After You'... except with Alanis Morissette-esque harmonice inserts during the track.

Next is my highlight track. I know most people despise covers, but anybody who dares to cover Bobby Daryn deserves a warm applause. 'Dream Lover' stay almost faithful to the original in structure but with an electric guitar and a more insistent drum beat/clap combination... oh and the shakers make all the difference!

'I'm Going To Be Married' pays tribute to Lisa Carver, editor of early 90's magazine 'Rollerball' which championed bands like Hole and Bikini Kill and singer with the infamous Suckdog. A 2 minute rock song sounding more like the Go-Go's then the Riotgrrl genre that is associated with Mrs Carver (download the full mp3 here).

The final track, 'Make Your Wish Come True'... where do I start? It sounds like a garage punk band lead by the Chipmunks. The vocal in it is soo sickly sweet it borders on grinding, yet stops just short and is instead just amusing.

This 7 track E.P by the teens (yeah, I didn't review every track, so sue me!) is all I look for in a demo, promising, competent and they throw in a little extra... amusement. When it comes down to it, I can see them being a great little band around their home county of Yorkshire and maybe a few indie releases (especially if Miss Vergho gets wind of them!)

I know they are kitch, I know they are tacky and I know I should know better, but in the words of that time old classic 'I don't know why I love you, but I do!'
