On their debut, 69 Corp take the frayed ends of mid-period Primal Scream and splice them neatly to classic-sounding sixties pop hooks. It’s an ambitious formula that works more often than you might think. Tracks like ‘Nowhere Walking’ and ‘Every Loop Every Lock’ are dreamily beautiful, showing off a fondness of Parisian electro duo Daft Punk, while the title-track is less atmosphere, more trippy guitar-driven pop.
Sounding at once innovative and dated like a long-lost collaboration between Gillespie and Kevin Shields, ‘Our Present To The Future’ fires off in multiple directions and never stays in one place for too long. It’s kind of schizophrenic, which on one hand means that a lot of people will find something to love here, even if some of it takes a little while for the remainder of it to fully sink in. Still, as tracks as perfectly bleak as ‘Soda Called’ begin to take hold, it’s hard not to lose yourself in their bleary-eyed vision.
