Oh yes, this latest release from Nitro has a real loud, fast, mean, dirty attitude about it right from the first distorted blues-rock riff. Having emerged from the energetic roots of NY punk rock The Turbo Acs combine an intense surf-guitar twang with honest lyrics that scream LIVE TO WIN and contagious sing a long choruses a la Misfits & Supersuckers.
And don’t think they’re new to the rock n roll circuit because to make music this mean & loud the band has to have paid their dues. Although even from the start they’ve been blowing crowds away at the legendary CBGBs alongside Social Distortion, Sick of it All and, ahem, No Doubt.
But it’s since 98’s ‘Winner Takes All’ that The ACs’ raw sound has really took off, gaining a legion of fans in US mags like Gearhead & Flipside. Listening to their 3rd full length, the Roger Miret [from NYHC granddaddies Agnostic Front]-produced ‘Fuel For Life’ there’s a kinda heavy Hot Rod/drag strip theme & along with Sweden’s Puffball there’s seems to be some sort of new sub-genre emerging in this field.
The AC’s own brand of grease-punk dragstrip rock has been described as Dick Dale [the geezer from the Pulp Fiction OST] meets Motorhead but in my opinion there’s also a hefty helping of Zeke fighting it’s way out.
Whether The Turbo ACs are back where they started on the East Coast playing basement punk rock shows w/ The Dropkick Murphys or on stage in front of 10,000 people in Europe, it seems the style and integrity will always remain intact. In the words of the band, “The songs are fuel for life & the message is live to win”.
