e sussex countryside, an intense recording period commenced. joined initially by her three trusted band members, matthew gest, sam walker and matthew waer the bare bones of the songs were laid down and slowly built upon. like the ep, shona took a hands-on role, co-producing and co-mixing the album with long-term collaborator rob quickenden. the result is a truly inspired and beguiling album.
delving into it is like stumbling across an old, ornate music box in a dusty attic. from the gorgeous, breathy swells and swoons of opener 'no 34' through the tipsy, fairground waltz of 'ferris' and on to the haunting, radiogram romance of 'collision', its contents are an ever-changing feast of surprise and wonder. as you sit enthralled, decades and distances dissolve - one minute you're marching through crisp, deep snow towards the winter palace ('love and war'), the next sinking into the plush, red velvet of a 1930s parisian cabaret theatre ('queens').
