This is a series of demos, perhaps released to show how the band got from A-Z and shed the obvious hallmarks of those influences in the process. »

department of eagles, the languid and spacey duo of grizzly bear's daniel rossen and former college roommate fred nicolaus, were working on music long before releasing the 2008 album 'in ear park'. on this new collection, you hear how they built that sound. 'archive 2003-2006' collects music that the duo created after releasing their debut lp, 2003's 'the cold nose'. about half the tracks are 'practice room sketches', recorded in practice rooms at new york university. also included is music from the 'january sessions', recorded in january 2006. waggish and at times breathtakingly intimate, this set showcases the development of department of eagles' detailed approach to crafting sounds. 'archive 2003 - 2006' captures their song-writing at a few moments of critical development and provides the template for the ambitious, sprawling pop of their later accomplishments.
