joe pernice, a northampton, massachusettes native began his recording career in the mid-90's with alt-country four-piece scud mountain boys. they released two records before signing to seattle's sub pop in 1996 for whom they released the album 'massachusetts'. in 1997 joe disbanded the scuds and formed pernice brothers whose debut 'overcome by happiness' was also released by sub pop. joe pernice' first solo outing 'big tobacco' was released in europe in 2000 and subsequently saw a us release. later that year joe left sub pop and established ashmont records with long term manager joyce linehan. joe has also published a volume of poetry called 'two blind pigeons' and a novella for continuum books' 33 1/3 series, 'meat is murder'. pernice' music has appeared in the movies fever pitch and slaughterhouse rules, the television shows six feet under and the gilmore girls, and in television ads for sherwin-williams, sears and southern comfort. 'it feels so good when i stop (novel soundtrack)' is a companion piece to joe pernice's debut novel of the same name. according to pernice, 'though the book is not explicitly about music, there are quite a few cover and fictional songs mentioned, so i thought it would be a cool idea for me to record some of those songs and release them, as a soundtrack album to the novel.' 'it feels so good when i stop (novel soundtrack)' comprises ten beautifully performed cover versions of songs by artists as diverse as del shannon, sebadoh and the dream syndicate.
