If it weren’t apparent enough previously: Kanye Just Wants To Be Liked.
Because with ‘Homecoming’, a track feasibly written to get Hilary and Obama throwing fists for it as their canvassing call, ol’ Kanye the chameleon has drafted in Chris Martin on what is one of the rare moments on Graduation - and West’s chart-bothering career in general - that doesn’t thieve its hook from some renowned track from yesteryear.
Kudos has to go to Martin. Everyone seems to have neglected that the Coldplay lynchpin writes tracks to mope over your red wine with; not the kind you expect to earn him a call-up to pen hurdy-gurdy piano hooks for rap superstars. Yet he’s here, yelping and yodelling towards the end like a man bewildered by how he has ended up in such company.
Then again, Kanye may be equally bewildered by how his slow-jawed rhymes and hook-pilfering habits have got him so far.
Either way, this is dreary.
