Better known to club-goers – well, more discerning (and probably east London-based) club-goers, anyway – as Drop The Lime (aka Luca Venezia), Curses! is a crafter of incessantly petulant beats that probe away at the listener’s cranium ‘til cracks spread and all that gooey goodness comes dripping out, from ears to shoulders, knees and toes.
‘Hungry For Love’, which comes backed on 12” by a vocal sample-heavy mash-up of retro beats and futuristic shimmer by the name of ‘This Is The Way’ (listen; is that M/A/R/R/S we can hear in the background?), is the kind of eight-minute hands-in-the-air triumph that any DJ worth his or her fee could slip into a modern dance set without those well-schooled dancefloor denizens breaking step. It’s reminiscent of Norman Cook’s dalliances with fun-time party bangers beyond the Fatboy Slim moniker, namely the Mighty Dub Katz, albeit stripped of the Big Beat playfulness. Bentley Rhythm Ace, this ain’t.
But it is just as immediate as, for example, the once-brilliant ‘…Gonna Sort You Out’, and mercifully some bass licks away from Apollo 440. Which is something we should all be grateful for as we get sweaty while necking bottles of Two Dogs.
Sorry, it’s what year?
Decade schmecade: ‘Hungry For Love’ possesses an odd timeless quality that ensures it’ll be booming out of club-land PAs for as long as its grooves will last.
