Last time we encountered North London three-piece Let’s Wrestle they were lounging round on sofas, watching DVDs and measuring their penises. This time round, they’ve held it together long enough to write easily their most focused tune to date.
On the surface, not much has changed: the bass sounds out of tune, guitar lags like a sulky teen dragged out on a Sunday afternoon shopping trip to DFS, lyrics as deviantly askew as ever (“the duvet’s on fire, so is your hair, but darling that’s the way it is”).
But like The Buzzcocks running down the street with their pants round their ankles, ‘I Won’t Lie To You’ all but trips over itself to bowl the listener over in a frenzied rush of pop hooks. It ends on a fumbled guitar solo that sees our favourite reprobates get to third base before collapsing in a sweaty heap.
Utterly perfect, in its own retarded way.
