Abdominal

Abdominal Workout

Label: Antidote Release Date: 01/10/2007

27923
Mike_Diver by Mike Diver October 2nd, 2007

Fun times preoccupy Abdominal, Canadian emcee riding DJ Format beats. Though the British summer slipped by with nary a week of blessed sunshine left unscathed by passing gloom and torrential downpours, our rapping protagonist cares little for the downers that pepper the day-to-day; instead, backed by the kind of arrangement designed only to get nerve endings sparking, he sets about putting a smile on the faces of those dampened of spirit.

While ‘funky’ is damn near a curse word in contemporary critical vernacular, in the case of this single it’s an appropriate adjective to precede ‘party starter’: not for a second does ‘Abdominal Workout’ relent, its candyflossed cacophony constant for a full three-minute fix. Course, such music lends itself not to longevity, nor to overt acclaim, but when a single beams brighter than a sadly absent sun you’ve simply got to roll with its positive punches.

Lifted from Abdonimal’s Escape From The Pigeon Hole LP, ‘…Workout’ is both a neat introduction to one of the more wordy emcees out there – seriously, where this guy takes a breath is a mystery – and a reminder that storm clouds may dull a day, but they needn’t impact upon an upbeat state of mind.
