John Peel: diabetic and loving it
oappleby by Ollie Appleby October 1st, 2001
John Peel diagnosed as diabetic and is relieved by the diagnosis, as he had imagined it was a terminal illness.

John Peel, one of the original Radio 1 DJs, who still does a three-times-a-week evening show for the station, was diagnosed at the West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds: "I emerged from the hospital a diabetic. I was strangely pleased,"

He is now treating himself with insulin saying: "I'd rather not be doing it at all, of course, but I have to say I feel better already. Much better." he added: "I inject into my abdomen, an area in which nature has been particularly generous to me."

Peel missed an edition of his BBC Radio 4 series Home Truths earlier this month because he was feeling progressively worse and had taken a blood test.

"I've felt terrible, off and on, for years, but had assumed it was part of the ageing process. Worst of all was the fatigue... I also felt, as Led Zeppelin would have put it, dazed and confused."
