As part of the week long Memphis Industries takeover, The Go! Team have compiled their 'Top Ten Girl group songs'.
The Go! Team will play at Koko on 30th November as part of "Lucky Thirteen" - a celebration of thirteen years of Memphis Industries.
I've always been a sucker for 60's girl groups, don't know if its the reverb, the melodrama or the aching melodies but they've always been a big influence on The Go! Team. The Spector stuffs cool but I prefer the no hit wonders. I think part of the attraction is the mystery around them - often they were one off singles where a producer dragged a 17 year old girl off the street into a studio for one day and were never heard of again. They're like a record of youth - like a tattoo. Anyway here’s my top 10 sixties sisters...
1. Gonna Be A Big Thing - The Yum Yums
The Yum Yums from Philly apparently went on to become the better known Honey and the Bees. I think they might be my dream band...
2. Loving Good Feeling - The Lollipops
The Lollipops weren't on Motown but being from Detroit the Funk brothers backed ‘em on this one. Pretty sure its their only single. this is what pop music is....
3. Heh Mama You've Been On My Mind - The Caravettes
The Caravelles were a British girl duo named after a French airliner. They were co-workers who entertained at office parties and amateur shows. 'Heh Mama' was released in 1965 - check out the reverb on this one..
4. The Cake - Baby That's Me
Clearly The Cakes answer to 'Be my baby' but I think this might actually be better. In fact it was recorded in Gold Star studios in LA where Spector recorded. This was their debut single in '67. One of my favourite all time songs...
5. The Wonderlettes - How Soon
The Wonderlettes only ever release. I challenge you to find out anything about these girls - i wonder what happened to em. I love how this feels like one big drum fill...
6.Heaven Is In Your Arms - The Admirations
Super obscure - this single would set you back £300. This girls voice is a dream...
7. Tonight I'm Gonna Dream - The Chiffons
One of the biggest girl groups in the 60's largely thanks to Carole King writing songs for them. This song reminds me a bit of dancing queen in the way it totally romanticises the idea of going out. Everyone should play this on a saturday nite...
8. He's Not There Anymore - The Chymes
First heard this on the 'girls in the garage' compilation series which are well worth checking out. All I know about these is that they were an all girl band from LA and discovered by Howard Kaylan of the Turtles. Such a strange song - the way it goes from minor to major in the chorus. Amazing songwriting....
9. Whirlwind - The Rev-lons
10. I Miss My Surfer Boy - The Westwoods
This completely forgotten song was the musical answer to another completely forgotten song “NY’s a Lonely Town,” about a love-lorned girlfriend back home in Los Angeles. better than the beach boys...
