Ah. Metal. So much hair, sweat and tattoos. Now DiS loves a bit of fury-filled metalcore noisemongering from time to time, so we do. Problem is, see, that it's a bloody nightmare sorting the wheat from the chaff. One minute you could be listening to a master of the genre, and before you know it you're trying to find artistic merit in the music made by a bunch of illiterate teenagers from Hyuck, Dakota or a Scandinavian man pretending to be a troll.
So, we turned to Alex, Thom and Mark from Holy Roar's newest noiseniks, Throats - who are well and truly flying the flag for rage and bile with their debut EP, Throats – for the lowdown on their favourite bands. Enjoy with Jaegerbombs...
At The Gates - 'Slaughter of the Soul'
Thomas: Along with Entombed and Dissection, this band completely nail death metal. Not only are they insanely heavy, they prove that you don’t need to play pop to write brilliantly catchy, solidly structured songs with incredible hooks. The way they move from section to sections, bridging riffs is completely flawless, never dragging or lacking intensity.
Backstabbers Inc - 'We Will Not Be Wiped Out'
Mark: Backstabbers Inc are my biggest influence. I saw them in a tiny pub in my hometown and they destroyed. They're really intense and uncompromising in their art, aren't interested in fads or fashions, and simply make heavy music that matters. They give a shit when so many others don’t.
Khanate – 'Dead'
Thomas: 'Dead' is overwhelmingly heavy; with this song, Khanate manage to capture the total essence of evil. Whenever I listen to this track I realise that I actually enjoy my life: it’s so disgustingly dark and harsh that i can’t help but reflect on what it means to be human. Yeah, that sounds stupidly pretentious but listen to it, watch the video and you’ll understand exactly what I mean.
Old Man Gloom - 'Gift'
Mark: This song is so atmospheric: it just sounds huge, and inspires me every time i hear it. The vocals are so rich and the riffs are crushing. If you don’t like Old Man Gloom, you’re an idiot. Sorry, but that's the way it is.
Trap Them – 'Insomniawesome'
Alex: I was completely blown away when I first heard Sleepwell Deconstructor. It was the first album I’d listened to that had the perfect mix of grind, d-beat and crust. The album is unrelenting and the opening track Insomniawesome crashes in with such intensity and harshness that you instantly know how powerful the songs are going to be. On top of this, Ryan Mckenney’s lyrics are spat out with such anger and hate that it is impossible not to be captivated by this song.
Cursed - 'Friends In The Music Business'
Mark: This sums up how so many honest bands out there feel, and just put it so straight. So many bands just don’t have a fucking clue and don’t have to work for shit. The industry is there to survive, not help the bands, and it thrives off exploiting young bands/idiots who are just after fame.
Breather Resist - 'Midas in Reverse'
Thomas: Of all Breather Resist's tracks, ‘Midas in Reverse’ shows how diverse heavy music can be, evolving from a Jesus Lizard-esque groove into something completely unhinged and rabid. I’m completely in love with the way everything sits in the mix, and the bass tone is perfect, raw and punchy without ever moving into muddy distortion. Sure, blast beats, Slayer riffs and breakdowns are great, but you can still be totally intense without them.
High on Fire – 'Rumors of War'
Alex: This is my favourite High on Fire song; they have such a unique sound as a band and Rumors of War perfectly captures the wall of sound that drives forward when you listen to this band. The vocal breaks and double bass keep the song at a pace that is impossible not to bang your head to. Everytime I listen to this song I get just as excited as I did the first time I listened to it. - Alex
