Ahead of her Valentine's Day musical extravaganza this Saturday at RoTa (featuring live performances from Jeremy Warmsley, My Vitriol, Holy Samanas), folk-noir songstress Catherine A.D. talks us through her imaginary soundtrack to a broken heart.
Magnetic Fields 'I Don't Want To Get Over You'
My personal favourite anthem for all those in denial. I have actually lost count of the number of times I have strained to scream in baritone (don't try this at home) :
"Cos I don't want to get over love / I could listen to my therapist / pretend you don't exist and not have to dream of what I dream of".
You must dress in black whilst listening to this. Clove cigarettes optional (YouTube).
Fiona Apple 'Limp'
Possibly the best (and only?) song about imagining your ex pleasuring himself to humiliation... (YouTube).
Ryan Adams 'Come Pick Me Up'
"...steal all my records / screw all my friends / they're all full of shit / with a smile on your face and then do it again"
Oh Winona, give Ryan his records back plz.
Sun Kil Moon 'Carry Me, Ohio'
Ok. So not all heartbreak songs are about being on the sharp end. Sometimes you just can't muster enough of the old 'caring' (as Kozelek puts it) to hang onto your lover. Probably the sweetest song ever that is basically saying, sorry, but I don't like you that much: "Sorry that i could never love you back" (YouTube).
The Mountain Goats 'No Children'
Best sung when gloriously drunk and toasting your ex-paramour with friends, coming up with increasingly gruesome ends for said person - "And I hope you die / I hope we both die":
"I hope I never get sober / And I hope when you think of me years down the line / You can't find one good thing to say / And I'd hope that if I found the strength to walk out /You'd stay the hell out of my way" (YouTube).
Xiu Xiu 'Fabulous Muscles'
Some girls wish for flowers and chocolates. Some girls dream of white weddings and candlelight. When I die I want someone to love me enough to place my cremated remains beneath their sweaty sticky workout bench while they pump iron. Oh yes.
The Veils 'Lavinia'
Gorgeous sweeping strings and a cracked beauty of a voice that makes you want to fall in love and do it all over again. No idea what he is actually singing but it sounds like he means it.
