The Marsupials answer back
The Marsupials answer back
jmoore by James Moore November 24th, 2000

Koala formed in Lichfield, Staffordshire in the Summer of 1997 when school

friends, Martin Cadwallader (Guitars, Vocals, Keyboards), Tim Paul (Keyboards,

Programming, Vocals) & Gareth Evans (Bass, Vocals) began writing &

recording songs. In 1998 the band upped sticks and shifted to Birmingham to live

in a big house just like the Monkees. In late 98/early 99, the band went into a

studio in Tamworth to begin recording their debut EP. That was Super-Rotunda. In

late 1999 Koala acquired Daniel Strittmatter, ex drummer of the High Llamas, and

Ian McNabb, and began recording their second collection of tunes 'Solid Gold

Selection', which was finished in early 2000. They've recently moved to the

"Big Smoke" and will play a gig next Tuesday (28th November) at

the Half Moon, Putney. Make sure your there to check out their lovely "Psychedelic

Power Pop" and to see the "TheSuperKoalaStereoSurroundSoundSystem"

in action.

The questions were answer by various members of Koala

Where did the name Koala come from?

It came from outer space, gauged into the side of a huge floating black slab.

Probably written there by the Owl Overlords (from Orbitron)

What's the story of Koala so far?

Please refer to 'The Origin Of The Species' by Charles Darwin for a full and

frank account.

**If you were to make a mix tape of your musical influences, what would be

on the tape?**

The soundtrack to High Noon

Recordings of Great Western Steam Trains

Kate Bush- Wuthering Heights

K- Tel classics

anything by the Minipops

What other things influenced you to become a musician?

Married Women, The prospect of dressing in women's clothing, Ethical discussions

with bass players

If you could get someone to cover one of yr songs who would it be and why?

The London Symphony Orchestra - Martin wants to flirt with the Cello players

Johnny Cash - He's great

The Corrs - They sell a lot of records and we could record the next 10 albums

for free!

What sort of people do you think listen to your music?

Really Fantastic People. The gentry, royalty, officers of the British Armed

Forces & dry tampon sucking librarians

**What one question would you most like to be asked in an interview?

**

Would you like a free meal/free holiday/free van/free record deal?

or

Talk to me about your philosophical views?

And your answer?

Yes to all of the above

What do you think of Napster and MP3s?

Very good indeed especially for folks like us. Tim says "Scour is better

than Napster" Martin says "I use Napster at work" Gaz says "Reeeaallly

Martin, that's very interesting"

**What plans do you have for the future?

**

We were planning on having a baby - a single parent family - kind of like a

hilarious new American film -"My 4 Dads"

**What do your family think about your music?

**

Martin: They prefer the Ramones and Gwar

Daniel: My mother thinks I'm a beautiful human being and my father thinks he

knows best

Tim: My parents forced me onto the stage at the age of 3

Gaz: They don't understand

**How do you manage to jump up and down, play your instruments and sing at the

same time?

**

Crack Cocaine

**Why do all your song title's get nicked by pop acts? (Kylie - Spinning

Around, Scooch - The best is yet to come)

**

"Cos they're fucking great and we can't afford copyright"

"We have a songs for sexual favours deal with all these pop acts (We're

working with Westlife at the moment)"
