It may not have truly kicked off for Crackout the first time round, but in true English spirit they’ve got their heads down, had a few cups of tea and packed in their angsty emo-rock gusto for something a lot closer to home. The Oxford threepiece are an archetypal British band, and if the suited drummer and wry wit aren’t conclusive proof, then ‘Out Of Our Minds’ certainly is.
Recalling The Cure and Sleeper, Steve Eagles’ spiral-swing new-age indie tale of night-time drunkfoolery recalls the kind of amiable jangliness that neighbours Supergrass too conjured up back in 1995. They don’t waste time with emotional engagement, although Steve’s sob-dripped vocals do gift the song considerable personality. That said, their comeback song is loose, urgent and infinitely uplifting. Summer 2003’s finally got a wake-up-and-down-another-vodka-Red-Bull anthem, now go get out of your minds.
