JJ72 split; world's turn unaffected by non-existent aftershocks

Sort of popular, albeit only to old-school Melody Maker readers, rock trio JJ72 have called it a day.

The Irish three-piece - Mark Greaney, Fergal Matthews and second bassist Sarah Fox - issued a joint statement:

"We remember everything, from mechanical birds in Japan to angels in arid Arizona, from broken bones and Berlin birthdays to predatory Portsmouth spiders.

“For those who disliked and perhaps despised JJ72, thank you - how did beautiful photographs exist without a negative?! We crafted two monuments of magnificence for the future aural pleasure and pain of all would be JJ believers and doubters... and for those who care not for the passing of the petulant yet powerful pup... shame on you!

“Thank you to Hilary Woods for being a dazzling damsel and thank you to all who played music in/with the band. You know who you are."

Hilary Woods was, of course, the band's bass player before Fox. Her twin sister used to date Greaney, which lead to all manner of joke opportunities when Hilary left the band. Did we make any? Can't remember... I may have mumbled something down t'boozer after an IPA too many.

Greaney is currently working on a solo album.

I thought

they dissapeared ages ago.

If Greaney's solo album is as pretentious as that press release

it will be a thing of rare wonder.

And Hilary dated the drummer

But more importantly, they were really rather good. Was the slight 'who cares?' tone really necessary?

indeed...

the end of eleven years of annoyance?

cause for celebration, non?

Now, if only King Adora would reform to split again...

To be honest...

I'm not sure not many people "disliked and perhaps even despised" 'em. For the last couple of albums no-one actually has cared too much.

I don't mean that in a piss-taking or slagging off way - I've not listened to either of the last two albums myself sp have no idea how good they are - but it does strike me that they seemed to get left behind somewhere around 2001 and never really manage to keep up any kind of momentum.

IPA!

Choice.

i've got just one question

why wont it snow?

on another note, the first bassist was the only thing people went to see them for, and even she looked like a gelfling from the dark crystal.

Shame

I always liked JJ72. Not sure why they never quite made it big.

Which

IPA though?

Greene Kings is the most common one, at least in the south-east but many brewerys produce a beer called IPA. The letters probably stand for something.

it stands for

Indian Pale Ale

yep....

its because of

UB40

And Toploader.

to be hones

i do take the piss, but i saw them with amen + starsailor + alfie at the astoria and they weren't that bad.

Whats wrong with being an ex-Melody Maker fancier?

...bless it, it was like a naive innocent little NME towards the end. A Smash Hits with indie bands. They looked after Mansun and Younger Younger 28s when everyone else took the piss. And for that I sort of needed them...

what ?

King Adora have already split !
I'm officially sad...

Damn

JJ72 were a great band. They made two fantastic albums and were also brilliant live.

I wasn't too fond of their two albums...

...but it's never nice to see a band split and I felt they still probably had a lot more to offer.

FACT:

My National Insurance Number begins with JJ 72.

*...

and I bet yours doesn't...

Crap.

tone necessary?

yes.

OTHER FACT

In one of the first hours of Day 5 of 24, Chloe's access code thing is JJ72.

JR 45

!!!

lovely headline!

JN 55

I'm going to get the drummer from JJ and make a band with that name.

JR87!

Go on

Release 'October Swimmer' one. more. time.

this, totally sucks.

I was at that gig

Who the hell are Alfie?

JJ72: not a very good band, but I remember quite liking 'Algeria' at the time. I also thought it was brave of them to admit to being influenced by The Smashing Pumpkins at a time when that was deeply, deeply uncool.
Perhaps it still is?

10 points

For use of the word "gelfling" - something I always find worthy of praise.
