Run to the Hicks: new DVD in May
- Artists:
- Bill Hicks »
Ryko are to release a new Bill Hicks DVD on May 8th. Sane Man is the first-ever complete Hicks performance to be released on video/DVD, with footage dating from 1989.
At the time Hicks hadn't even recorded his first comedy album, so Sane Man is quite the historical document. It - and this is where the PR blurb kicks in, "shows a turning point in Hicks' development - a newly sober Hicks paces the stage like a wild animal..."
Like a monkey. Or a molerat. YEAH.
As with all DVDs, apart from the cheap ones you get at service stations, there are extras aplenty: outtakes, a biography, unseen stuff featuring Hicks dressed as Elvis, an essay, et cetera.
So yeah. Buy it. If you like. Or don't. Whatever.

Wow
The Warner group sure move fast!
nah...
this has been on Ryko's ads for ages now. it actually came out in the U.S last year too. in fact, i picked a copy up there for $7 a couple weeks ago.
its pretty good. a lot of the stuff on there you've heard / seen before from the later recordings, but this stuff's a litle earlier so not quite as finely tuned as it would become further down the line. some bits lack the power of the later versions of the same routines.
still... 'pretty good' Bil lHicks is still about 700% better than most stand-ups 'best'.
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!
Hicks is the greatest comedian to ever walk the planet and I'm prepared to wrestle to the death with anyone who disagrees. GRRRRR. *manly chest-beating*
Let's have a quotathon!!
"What the fuck is a Gideon anyway? Have I ever seen one? NO."
ok
"i've got cancer."
classic.
reading his biography at the moment which i'm really enjoying. will definately be getting this. toot toot.
!
I shall be getting this indeed, the Relentless DVD was very cool too. He was almost Orwellian in his prophicising. That and the fact that history repeats itself perfectly over and over.
"I think the puppet on the left shares my beliefs. I think the puppet on the right is more to my liking. WAIT, theres one guy holding both puppets! Argh! ....Go back to bed America, your Government is in control."
People should check out David Cross too.
really?
a friend just bought 'mr show' by david cross and wasn't too impressed. i'll try and track some mp3s down later. any suggestions?
as an aside: he's awesome in arrested development
David Cross...
...played Reading's Comedy Tent unannounced last year - I think he overran by about half an hour too. Funniest thing I've seen since 'Arrested Development'.
mr show RULES
period. it may take a bit to get into, but it is soooooo funny. worth the time & effort.
but not close to bill. no one is.
I've never found Cross funny at all.
George Carlin is the only other person I think that comes close to Hicks in terms of musing, maybe Bruce as well.
"My god, what balls! He needs a wheelbarrow to haul those round. 'Make way, man with big balls coming through'"
!
Actually I havn't seen Mr Show.
His (Import only) "Shut Up You Fcking Baby" and SubPop released "It's Not Funny" are funny as hell though, simular subjects to Bill Hicks but not as dark in places, I've yet to actually see him live which is poor as he's doing ATP W2 this year.
If you go to the Subpop website you can download some stuff from both albums.
"...thats why Jesus had so many followers, they were all severe alchoholics, willing to follow him to the ends of the earth just pointing at puddles of water saying "look, Jesus, puddle...a Sibbly, a two year old sibbly, it's easy"..."
"Has anyone seen that show...you know, erm, where there's this guy on stage and he claims he has contact with the dead and everyone believes him...(audience mumbles)...No no..it's church"
"Like a monkey. Or a molerat."
Or a GOATBOY
Is it just me or is Mr. Hicks remarkably handsome in that picture?
GOOOOOAAATTBOOOOOOOY!
*mwahahahaha*
hold onto my horns
flag burning
his skit on this when it happened 10-15 years ago is so goddam pertinent right now. & the "freedoms" that the flag stands for, including the right to burn the flag if so desired, is so fucking spot on.
this dvd rocks. even though it has a bunch of skits that have made their way to dvd, it's worth it for the ones that haven't. bill is god. god is dead.
