Miss Black America: Debut Album Tour

DiS loves Miss Black America. You either rate or hate Miss Black America. Their albums out on Monday and they start another mammouth tour tomorrow, so do your bit and pop along...

This time last year we were gearing up for a Drowned in Sound ROCKtober tour with some punkrag upstarts called Miss Black America. Now, they're all growned up and fully-fledged rock bitches (in the nicest, most cynically sweet possible way!) and they have a debut album titled 'God Bless Miss Black America' out on Monday (Sep 16th 2002) featuring all the best bits from their live sets, all the past singles and a few new tracks. It's all going to be new to most people.

If you aint heard them yet, they're angry (but not loud, loud) young men, brought up in a time of Margret Thatcher, with punk properly dead by the time they started buying melody driven, soul-filled, rock records. Riding on the crest of a new wave of critically concious, fresh rock; they're well on the way of infiltrating their world of books, movies and cult tv upon the rest of us. They sound special. That's everything you needed to know, ever. We're nuts about them for a reason y'know.

Miss Black America: Debut Album Tour

You plum.

You forgot to mention that Miss Black America (and Bearsuit) are supporting Six By Seven at The Boat Club, Nottingham. As part of Radio One's 'One Live' thingy on Thursday October 31st.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/events/nottingham.shtml

Lots of good bands. Top banana.

Re: Miss Black America: Debut Album Tour

Travel, you lazy bastid. SOME of us live in remote crappy little towns in the middle of some hills with sheep, cows and old people and not much else and still manage to get to 2/3 gigs a week.

Still... 2 Sheffield dates in 4 days mmmm rrrrrrrrrrOCKtober indeedy.

TSK!

Yeah, anyway, I have the album and it's BRILLIANT and everyone should buy it. And, once you've bought it, you should then check out the big photo of Neil in the booklet and admire my photography skills *ahem* :D

Thats all

Re: Miss Black America: Debut Album Tour

yeah but just look at teh dates, any on somerset, or even Devon? no, Falmouth that's many miles away, i mean, where's th logic of playing in cornwall and missing out all of the counties on the way there and back?

I'll have to make do with Plymouth local skate-punk rubbish again.. at least MBA whoudl have broken up the month a bit...

ollie.

Re: Miss Black America: Debut Album Tour

Yeah but they've got support slots, work and other stuff to fit in innit.... I go to London/Manchester for gig's sometimes.... they're many hours of travelling away. It makes it more fun :)

it's more difficult for some of us ...

.. given that MBA have ignored a quarter of England :(

Re: Miss Black America: Debut Album Tour

oooooooooooooh... must get to that.

Re: Miss Black America: Debut Album Tour

MBA *and* 6x7. Two bands with wildly inflated opinions of themselves and their musical worth playing together.
Ha.

*Prepares to surround venue with a trail of petrol during soundcheck ready to set alight...*

MEANWHILE, in far sexier news...Wolves of Greece are going to get to be on national radio as part of one of the John Peel shows. Huzzah!

DOWN WITH MBA ! ALL HAIL WOLVES OF GREECE!

Jesus, now Wolves Of Greece is a band worth wetting yourself over. it's hilarious how MBA are getting so much coverage. every 5-6 years a group of foppish indie kids with a mild interest and half-baked understanding of politics, start spouting smart-arsed slogans and rant cliched diatribes against Thatcher/Bush/any semi-famous non-liberal. and all the morons rear there dazed, vacant heads and think "God! This band are so refreshing! Ooh, such an exciting approach! They're gorgeous, emaciated indie boys with eyeliner AND they shout about important things! Nobody can touch my new favourite band". It's such a laugh. *NEWS JUST IN* MISS BLACK AMERICA PLAY ANTI-NAZI PROTEST. MISS BLACK AMERICA DO NOT LIKE NAZIS. So fuck! There's a worthwhile benefit show every other night with bands that give a fuck but are intelligent and principled enough not to use it as a sordid means of media propaganda. Just the name 'Miss Black America' never fails to make me cringe with embarrassment.

Yadda yadda yadda

I don't like the politicising of music. It gets up my nose a bit. But to attack MBA purely on those grounds is missing the point. I like MBA because they rock like bastards, have great tunes and are seriously good live. If you can't (or won't) recognise those facts then fair enough. Go and listen to Jolly Green Bitchslap or whatever drivel you were banging on about.

Re: Yadda yadda yadda

Everything is political.

ollie.

Re: Miss Black America being cringeworthy chancers

I heard them discussing their set-list before a gig on one of their last tours.

"Hey, so are we playing that song then?"
"No, John Peel didn't like it".

TRULY, A BAND TO BELIEVE IN.

Re: DOWN WITH MBA ! ALL HAIL WOLVES OF GREECE!

Ho ho

You forgot to mention the lameness of their music as well. But that made me smirk all the same. Nice.

Would Peel get so wet over them (and their local bretheren) were they from, ooh let's say, Scunthorpe or Liphook as opposed to somewhere local to him, too?

Question, questions..

Re: Miss Black America being cringeworthy chancers

And here is what I hear from people like yourself outside MBA gigs.

#1: So, you like MBA?
#2: NME said they are gonna be big so I am here to say I saw them before they got big and then slag them off.
#1: Me too... what do you think of The Coral?

Re: DOWN WITH MBA ! ALL HAIL WOLVES OF GREECE!

not that i, like, enjoy their music or anything. not that i might have felt that their demo was one of the most promising things to turn up for a good while. and hey, never mind the fact that they're Really Fucking Good live.

and incidentally i find them a lot more engaging than a lot of the apathetic bands who have no opinion on anything other than themselves - they're at least prepared to put what they do to some use, to try and improve the world around them.

Re: Miss Black America being cringeworthy chancers

well, that might have the remotest of truth in it if wasn't a load of garbage. i didn't intentionally go to watch MBA (that name, hahaha. my sides). i was out to support a local beneftit show in my neighbourhood a few months ago, who'd seen fit to put this stinking, cliched heap of empty sloganeering on the bill. please, do not insult my intelligence and dignity by suggesting i ever read the NME. whatever vapid nonsense they want to hype to high heavens, that's your perogative. "i liked that band before you did", "this band deserve more coverage than this band". dear god. you seem to have slipped into some ugly, paranoid, NME-goverened hierachical universe. my friend, you must learn that music DOES actually exist outside of radio and magazine promotion.

Re: Miss Black America being cringeworthy chancers

Fuck me, man! What a tosser!

That said, I'm glad you bothered to make up a conversation we've never had.

Cheers for the advice on how to form an opinion based on sources of information other than the NME. And for reminding me of every useless, snobby, Camden slag artschool student scumbag wanker I've ever had the misfortune to engage in conversation about Tortoise b-sides and how Mogwai are, like, the only REAL band out there, maaaaan. Oh, but you're not like all those OTHER music fans, are you? 'Cause you know what it means to REALLY love music. The rest of us, we're all just mindless sheep, whereas you are a shepherd unto yourself; why, sometimes you even fuck yourself up the arse on a hillside when the nights are cold and long. And you've NEVER read the NME - NO SELL OUT! Man, you're SO COOOOL!!!

I hope I'm as cool as you when I grow up.

If you were in a band, you'd be called Dick Prick and the Monkeyfucking Busboys.

What this boy needs is a Rambutan!

Rambutans are a bizarre foodstuff. A friend of mine had a tin of them in his fridge for 5 years. They were there when he moved in. Not bad, but pineapple tastes better on its own.

Re: DOWN WITH MBA ! ALL HAIL WOLVES OF GREECE!

No. I wouldn't be able to bike over to his place to suck his golden cock.

Ooop, better go! There's a small child drowning and I never miss a photo opportunity.

SUCK ME SUCK ME SPACEMONKEY.

You're only bitching 'cause you want my arse.
